Answering Zakir Naik – Quran says there is no compulsion in religion

It is possible that this post is based on the translations and commentaries of Islamic texts like Quran, Hadiths etc. as published by all major Islamic publishing sources. These are the publicly available translations that are used for promotion of Islam by prominent representatives.

We, however, believe that most of these texts have been wrongly translated, misinterpreted, misquoted or even have been tampered with and interpolated to suit the selfish designs of proponents of Islam after Muhammad. Thus, we believe that original Islam and original Quran of Muhammad are totally different from what have been propagated by his followers in name of Islam. There are few minority groups in Muslims whose scholars subscribe to our views and interpret/translate Islamic texts differently or even refuse to consider the available Quran and Hadiths as authentic. But these scholars themselves are considered Kafirs and are condemned by a dominant elite group of Islam. Thus, when we refer to Islam, we actually imply these dominant elites of Islam and not Muslims or all Islamic scholars in general.

Wherever we critically evaluate Muhammad, we imply the fictitious Muhammad propagated by these false texts or their wrong translations and not the original Muhammad. We have high regard for original Muhammad who stood for non-violence and tolerance. Similarly, when we analyze Islamic texts, we refer to these questionable translations/versions and NOT original texts.

Further, we have a sense of the highest level of brotherhood for Muslims in general. Wherever we use the word Muslim in a critical manner, it refers to false representatives of Islam and not Muslims in general. Readers are requested to keep this in mind to understand the correct perspective of such posts on this website.

Nowhere should they assume the words like Islam, Quran, Prophet etc. to be referring to original noble entities, unless it has been referred in a positive light. We restrict ourselves only to notions prevalent in minds of fanatics and those without reason.

Zakir Naik Exposed
There is no compulsion in religion- another favorite quote of Zakir Naik to showcase his brand of Islam as a religion of peace. Even we agree that Surah Bakar 2:256 is one of the most benevolent verses of Quran. Had this been the only verse in Quran, I would have hailed it as the greatest slogan for tolerance and peace. Let me reproduce this great verse here:

Surah Bakar 2:256: There is no compulsion in religion

“La ikraha fee addeeniqad tabayyana arrushdu mina alghayyi faman yakfur bittaghootiwayu/min billahi faqadi istamsaka bilAAurwatialwuthqa la infisama laha wallahusameeAAun AAaleem”.

“There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower.”

I believe this verse must be belonging to the original Quran. This was the time when Muhammad was joining people together in Medina for his great faith. He wanted to make it as lenient and tolerant as one could. But this is only a small part from beginning of Quran. The real story unfolds from here:

Abrogated Verses in Quran

In Zakir’s Quran, many Ayats/verses are supposed to have been abrogated and replaced with new Ayats. Sounds confusing! But that’s true! Because there was no other way to create a new Quran from the old message of Muhammad. Let us explain this concept of abrogation a bit here:

This doctrine of abrogation is based on two verses that, according to Zakir, God allegedly instructed prophet to put into the Quran.

“None of Our revelations do We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, but We substitute something better or similar: Knowest thou not that Allah Hath power over all things?” Quran 2: 106

“When We substitute one revelation for another, and Allah knows best what He reveals (in stages), they say, “Thou art but a forger”: but most of them understand not.” Quran 16:101

As per these, new verses (Nasikh) in Quran replace old verses (Mansoukh). Out of 114 Chapters of Quran, at least 71 are supposed to have been affected by this concept of abrogation. Refer “al-Nasikh wal-Mansoukh” (The Abrogator and the Abrogated) which was authored by the revered Muslim scholar Abil-Kasim Hibat-Allah Ibn-Salama Abi-Nasr. The book goes through every Surah (chapter) in the Quran and cites in great detail every verse that was cancelled-out/overridden by particular verses that were written later.

The summary conclusion is clear. Out of 114 chapters of Zakir’s Quran, a maximum of 43 chapters remain which can be taken as authentic.

Quran 9.5: Slay the idolaters wherever you find them

Without getting into much details, let us come to the main point – Quran 2.256 that claims there is no compulsion in religion was abrogated and replaced by Quran 9:5 – The verse of sword. Now let us see what this verse is:

Sahih International

And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Pickthall

Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Shakir

So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Jalalayn

Then, when the sacred months have passed — that is, [at] the end of the period of deferment — slay the idolaters wherever you find them, be it during a lawful [period] or a sacred [one], and take them, captive, and confine them, to castles and forts, until they have no choice except [being put to] death or [acceptance of] Islam; and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush, [at every] route that they use (kulla, ‘every’, is in the accusative because a [preceding] genitive-taking preposition has been removed). But if they repent, of unbelief, and establish prayer and pay the alms, then leave their way free, and do not interfere with them. God is Forgiving, Merciful, to those who repent.

The essence is that kill the idol worshippers wherever you can. The next verses explain why you can never have a treaty with idol worshippers, and there are other verses which say that even if you have to make friends with Kafirs, make sure you have hatred against them in your heart. (Surah Imran 28)

There is no compulsion in religion

Now, in recent times, many scholars have started arguing that 2.256 was not abrogated, and it remains a valid verse of Zakir’s Quran. But this argument is contradictory of facts and itself:

• If indeed there is no compulsion in religion, why is punishment for apostasy DEATH in Islamic Shariat? Why does no scholar like Zakir Naik or anyone else ever proclaim that Suadi Arabia and all those countries who give death punishment for apostasy and insulting Islam/Prophet are against Islam and anti-Muslim?

• If indeed this peaceful verse is valid, why is the propagation of non-Muslim religions prohibited in Muslim countries?

• If indeed there is no compulsion in religion, why are there countless verses asking to have hatred against non-believers and kill them or force them to become Muslim?

Some other scholars say that this verse was indeed abrogated, but abrogation means that in a different context of war, the verse of Sword (9.5) would be valid, else in non-war situation verse of no compulsion would be applicable.

• If that be so, this implies double standards. It basically means that if you are not powerful enough, let there be no compulsion. So talk peacefully, but having hatred in heart for non-Muslims as per Sura Imran 28 and work for your agenda tactfully.

• But the moment you attain power, the verse of Sword gets applicable. Then kill the non-believers unless they ask for mercy and agree to become Muslims.

If this verse 9.5 is indeed meant for war, why does it refer to only killing idolaters/ polytheists/ Kafirs/ non-believers? Does it mean war can only be waged against non-Muslims? This again proves that purpose of war is subjugation and destruction of non-Muslims exclusively!

This has been testified in the history of the growth of Islam. Wherever they were powerless, they talked of peace and no-compulsion. And the moment they got powerful, they started forcing Islam through the threat of the sword.

Even in the history of Quran, the no-compulsion verse was revealed when Muhammad was still trying to get a set of followers for his mission. And the verse of sword was allegedly revealed after Islam had already become dominant. There is quite a possibility that, by this time, Prophet would have been imprisoned, and all false verse were inserted in his name. Or perhaps, after his death, this verse was inserted by his followers who were killing each other to establish their respective brand of Islam on sword’s point.

In any case, only a very few scholars have started claiming that no-compulsion verse is not abrogated, primarily after Islamism has been in scrutiny in last few years after its extremist face came to fore. They represent a minority, and no one dare condemn Muslim countries for having capital punishment for apostasy and ‘denigrating’ Islam.

Please also note that Zakir’s Islam claims to be the only true religion of the world. It refuses to provide the status of religion to other belief systems and puts them in forever Hell. Thus the verse on ‘no compulsion in religion’ only relates to minute differences within Islamic fold and does not refer to non-Muslims.

Some Muslim scholars say that only religions are Islam, Christianity and Judaism, and Islam is the only true one among them. So perhaps some terrorists may spare Christians and Jews as per this verse, but idolaters like Hindus are for sure not under the purview of this verse. This is evident from history where Islam was spread in India, merely by force of sword after killing and rapes of millions. They say Hitler performed the largest genocide. But if one looks into deeds of each of the barbaric Muslim looter from Muhammad Bin Qasim to Babur to Akbar to Aurangzeb to Tipu Sultan, each of them had been miles ahead of Hitler in brutality with added flavor of sexual perversion amounting to rape and sexual punishments.

As per Zakir ‘Terrorist’ Naik, if a country follows Islamic law (and Islamic law is the best law as per him since Islam is the best religion!), then it is justified to kill an apostate (anyone who leaves Islam) as per Holy Quran! In fact, Zakir Naik quotes from Quran to claim that Islam alone is a religion! Hence the concept of no-compulsion is valid only for Muslims!

Summary

We appeal to all Muslims and non-Muslims alike to come out of the trap of such an inhuman ideology.

• Neither is there any evidence of Zakir’s Quran being actually a work of Muhammad nor is it a book which stands anywhere on parameters of human rights, tolerance, peace, and rationality.
• It remains a book that is no way applicable today. It is the only book on earth where God is supposed to have revised and canceled his own previous message.
• There is nothing new (message of goodness, if at all) in Quran that is not already there in other ancient texts. Belief in Zakir’s Quran is based basically on blind belief on imaginary stories that provide no evidence or logic to be true. And blind belief can only breed intolerance.
• The evil designs of these fanatics is clear. They will showcase Islam as peaceful and friendly and tolerant and go all extent to prove this when they are not in the majority.
• The moment their power increases, they will start showing their true face and start applying verse of Sword. This is how they plundered India and rest of the world. This is how Zakir’s brand of Islam contributes to the almost entire supply of terrorism today. This is how any peaceful place in the world becomes violent/hell as a certain population crosses a threshold.

At least Indians should be aware of their evil designs. This is how the fanatics grabbed Pakistan and Bangladesh and became significantly dominant in the remaining India. Hindus have been having their sisters, daughters, and mothers raped by barbaric looters shouting Allahu Akbar for 1000 years and its high time they started understanding the true meaning of no compulsion.

An amnesiac person who enjoys feeding milk to snakes despite being bitten innumerable times is bound to be killed one day.

The worst victims of this blinded intolerant cult are those innocent Muslims, who cannot get out of its clutches due to fear of death and repression, and can also not gain the trust of rest of the world due to misdeeds of terrorists and extremists who predominantly hail from Islamism in last 1400 years.

We appeal to them to come to humanity, which is beyond barriers of caste and race, has no superstitions and only demand belief in the path of truth.

As with other chapters, all criticisms here are directed to a version of Islam as presented by fanatic mindsets like Zakir Naik, and their followers. It is not directed towards a host of minor sects and ideologies in Islam which themselves face a lot of atrocity for their beliefs. Some of them are:

Hashamiya / Taraqibiyah: They Predicate a body to Allah and also allege Prophet (PBUH) of disobedience to Allah.

Khazimiyah: They believe Allah loves men of all faiths even if one has been disbeliever most of his life.

Nazzamiyah: Followers of Abu-Ishaq Ibrahim ibn-Saiyar. They do not believe in the miraculous nature of the Holy Quran nor do they believe the miracles of Holy Prophet (PBUH) like splitting the moon.

Ibriyah: They believe that Holy Prophet (PBUH) was a wise man but not a prophet.

Fikriyya: They believe that doing Dhikr and Fikr (Remembering and thinking about Allah) is better than worship.

Tanasukhiya: They believe in the reincarnation of the soul.

Ahadiyah: They believe in the Fardh (obligations) in faith but deny the Sunnah.

Ammaliyah: They believe that faith for one is what he/she sincerely practices.

Hujjatiya: They do not believe in the punishment for deeds on the grounds that because everything is determined so whatever one does (s)he is not responsible for it.

Lafziyah: They believe that Quran is not the word of God, but only its meaning and essence is the word of God. Words of Quran are just the words of the narrator.

  4. 2+2=4 ..))) This is nothing but stupid logic by stupid people (ZN) for stupid people. Satyagniji these people never listen others good thing also. Those who are trying to be nice with some indian sorry (Bhartiyan) it is just because of they want to be here for some time and want to grab power. Once its got they will not even listen to single Hindu or Original Bhartiy…They will make their own law (Islamic law which are totally against humanity).
    In our village there is single muslim family and is totally mix with our society so we don’t have any problem still now but now they are growing they have number of sons which increase their family and definately will create problem for us. Because I already seen some village nearby which is having number of muslim family more and dominating that village and making environment violent and unpeaceful. May be peace upon you is not understandable for them which is taught by ZN.

  5. Are you serious??? I started doubting this article so I tried to do some research on it. Because I have never heard of Abil-Kasim Hibat-Allah Ibn-Salama Abi-Nasr EVER. And guess what I WAS RIGHT. He is a SHIAAAAA and NOT Sunni. So us MAJORITY of Muslims do not recognize him as an authrotative scholar. Sunnis do not turn to Abrogation EXCEPT as a last resort. This is a principle well understood within SUNNI islam. No SUNNI scholar has ever in history (please give references for those you DO find) that I know of has stated that ONLY 43 chapters remain after abrogation. The well known scholar (often said the scholar of the century) Shaykh Muhammad al-Ameen ash-Shanqeetee (died 1972) said there is abrogation only in less than 10 verses. Read SOME SUNNIIIIII writings like:

    الناسخ و المنسوخ للسيوطي
    الناسخ و المنسوخ لابي منصور البغدادي

    Stop copying and pasting else your always going to have a weak case.

    • I think this is true. A SHIA can never go to the heave. Except that SHIAs claim that SUNNI doesn’t go to heaven. Now I am confused… who goes to heaven again?

  6. At first there is only one religion of god. Later, the enemy of god corrupted the books of god and created other religions to deviate people from the true religion of god. The whole purpose of this are to allowed mankind to live as they wish and to dominate mankind as the religion of god will not allowed any law except the law of god.
    The whole books of god had been corrupted and the name of god changes with religion created by the enemy of god. Al Quran that is the last testament also been tampered and god’s name change to deviate people from the truth. Islam is created by the enemy of god to add into the collection of religions that deviate from the truth.
    The content of the al quran actually talks or preach back the oldest religion that is the religion of Abraham. This is the only religion accepted by God and this the religion that the enemy of god try to hide from mankind as man will be given the added advantage against the rest of the people in this world and bring back the glory of god. The Vedas also preach the religion of Brahman that actually refer to prophet Abraham as the books is actually translated from the language of heaven to sanksrit. There are a lot of common words in the vedas and the al quran before it is corrupted. Al Quran is actually brought by a man named Ahmad with an honor from God with prophethood named Mahamada. Ma-Give, Hamada-Guidance. After his death, the enemy of god created Islam and mislead people into believing that al quran talks about Islam and hide the fact that the whole content of al quran talks about the religion of Abraham.

  8. What is actually the name of God?
    Well, lets evaluate every religion and why God’s name differ between each religion.
    The Jewish called the name of God as El or Elohim. According to al quran, the torah revealed to prophet Musa is in the same language as the quran, so it supposed to spell Alif Lam Lam Ha and pronounce as Allaha (Al-Everything, Laha-Belongs to Him). So, when the enemy of God translatted the torah to Hebrew, they also change the name of God and take half of the name that is Al and changed it to El and from the character of God Al Rahayama to Elohim.
    The Christian say their God’s name is Yahweh. Okay, what this Yahweh mean. Well, as prophet Isa is from the tribe of Asara Yala (Israel), he speaks the Arabaya language that is the same language as the quran. So, the word Yahweh is actually comes from an arabaya name that is Ya Hawa meaning O He Is.
    What about the hindhu. Well, the name of God is in the Om symbol. The name of God, Alif Lam Lam Ha is rotated and the name is lost.
    Islam is created by corrupting the quran by putting sign and mark to the quran. So, they changed the name of God from Allaha to Allah that bears no meaning. Ask them if you do not believe me.

    Muslim guys: Discussions are allowed in Islam and not the arguments. A muslim should not speak about or scold any gods or goddess from other religions. This is prohibited in Islam. We as muslims, have the rights to explain them what Islam says. Thats the boundary of Islam. Please dont go beyond this. There should be difference between a muslim and others.

    Others: If you are aware of Islam, please speak. Otherwise, dont spread hatred. If you still speak, please identify and ensure that we people are Muslims now and also in the day of judgement.

  10. Mughalistan (or Mughalstan) is the name of an independent homeland proposed for the Muslims of India. This Mughal-Muslim state in the Indian subcontinent will include all of North India and Eastern India, and will be formed by merging Pakistan and Bangladesh through a large corridor of land running across the Indo-Gangetic plain, the heartland of India. This Mughalistan corridor will comprise Muslim-majority areas of Northern India and eastern India that will be partitioned for the second time in history.
    The comprehensive plan for a second partition of India was first developed by the Mughalstan Research Institute (MRI) of Jahangir Nagar University (Bangladesh) under the patronage of the two intelligence agencies, Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and Bangladesh’s Director General of Forces Intelligence, DGFI. The “Mughalistan Reaserch Institute of Bangladesh” has released a map where a Muslim corridor named “Mughalistan” connects Pakistan and Bangladesh via India.
    The Pakistani Punjabi-dominated ISI’s influence on MRI is evident even in the Punjabi-centric pronunciation of the word ‘Mughalstan’ (without the “i”), instead of the typical Urdu pronunciation (Mughalistan). Islamic Jihadis in India have been well-armed and well-funded by the neighbouring Islamic regimes, as part of Operation Topac – the late Pakistani President Zia-ul-Haq’s grandiose plot to balkanize India.

    Not surprisingly, Osama Bin Laden has thrown his support behind the concept and creation of this Greater Pakistan to “liberate” the Muslims of India from the Hindus. The Mumbai underworld (led by Karachi-based don Dawood Ibrahim who executed the gruesome 1993 Mumbai bombings), Jamaat-e-Islami, Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, Jaish-e-Mohammad and Hizbul Mujahideen have declared their unified support for creating this undivided Islamic nation in the Indian subcontinent. The Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and Indian Mujahideen are working in tandem with the aforementioned organizations to waged Jihad against the Hindus of India.

    It is important to note that in its “holy war” against India, the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba has openly declared Hindus to be the “enemies of Islam” who should all be converted or killed. The Lashkar-e-Tayyaba group has repeatedly claimed through its journals and websites that its main aim is to destroy the Indian republic and to annihilate Hinduism. Jaish-e-Mohammed has vowed to “liberate” not just Kashmir, but also to hoist the Islamic flag atop the historic Red Fort after capturing New Delhi and the rest of India.

    SIMI has championed the “liberation of India through Islam” and aim to restore the supremacy of Islam through the resurrection of the Khilafat (Islamic Caliphate), emphasis on the Muslim Ummah (Islamic) and the waging of Jihad on the Indian state, secularism, democracy and nationalism – the basic keystones of the Indian Constitution – as these concepts are antithetical to Islam. The Indian Mujahideen have sent several emails claiming responsibility for several bombings in Lucknow, Varanasi and Faizabad (in Uttar Pradesh), Bangalore, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and New Delhi in 2007 and 2008. The emails refer to notorious Islamic conquerors of India (Mohammed bin Qasim, Mohammad Ghauri and Mahmud Ghaznawi) as their role-models, refer to Hindu blood as “blood to be the cheapest of all mankind” and taunt Hindus that their “[Hindu] history is full of subjugation, humiliation, and insult [at the hands of Islamic conquerors]“.

    The Indian Mujahideen’s emails warn the Hindus to “Accept Islam and save yourselves” and or else face a horrible fate: – “Hindus! O disbelieving faithless Indians! Haven’t you still realized that the falsehood of your 33 crore dirty mud idols and the blasphemy of your deaf, dumb, mute and naked idols of ram, krishna and hanuman are not at all going to save your necks, Insha-Allah, from being slaughtered by our [Muslim] hands?”
