Learn Sanskrit Month 12

Twelfth installment of the course.

Routine reiteration:

a. Do not get too bogged down by grammar and usage while you learn Sanskrit. Often Sanskrit is considered to be all about mugging up lots of declensions and conjugations and this fears off most students. Instead take is as a natural language. Feel free to make the most blatant grammatical errors so far you are able to convey your message. Develop a feel for the language instead of thinking about grammar.

How did we learn Hindi or English or our mother tongue? Did we learn grammar first or language first? And do we speak these languages in a grammatically correct fashion even today? Why burden Sanskrit with overdose of grammar in very beginning then?

Simply start talking on every other thing in Sanskrit and enjoy the funny pronunciations you make or blatant errors you make in grammar. Have a laugh on that and simply continue. Soon you will develop a natural grip over the language and grammar will be automatically taken care of.

b. Try using Sanskrit words even in your mother language. After all Sanskrit is the mother of all languages. Let the children associate with their Mom and have their foundations strengthened! And in process, your road to mastery of Sanskrit will also be traversed faster.

c. Download a copy of Introduction to Vedas (Hindi) from http://agniveer.com/2045/introduction-to-vedas/ if you know Hindi. This is an amazing text not only to understand Vedic concepts but learn Sanskrit naturally. Because most sections of the book are presented in very simple Sanskrit as well as Hindi. In some sections there are deviations in Sanskrit and Hindi message and it would be a good idea to explore those areas and form the right opinion!

  1. Dear Shri Agniveerji
You are doing a wonderful job of educating people about vedic studies and helping them in learn Sanskrit the easy way. Is it free of charge? I am 75 and would like to learn it. Will it take 12 months in my case to study scriptures in sanskrit?

    Regards

The lessons on the site are of course free. For regular classes, we are trying to find a feasible option. That cannot be free because we will have to pay the professionals. But we would attempt to keep charges nominal.

As for studying scriptures, yes it should take around 12 months to reach a level where you can read with some help on vocabulary and usage.

  2. namaste agniveer,
i studied sanskrit for 6 years in school. Quite embarassed to say have forgotten most of it. Thankful to you for this initiative.
Having said that i would like to know the correct sanskrit meaning of aditya.
It is used for the sun god. Also meaning belonging to aditi.aditi is boundless.
A pundit told me it means second to none. I want correct sanskrit definition that is consistent with vedas.

  3. Dear Agniveer,
I listened some episods of peace TV and found that jakir didn’t know much about sanskrit. He know some words of sanskrit and based on this he assumed something about quran mentioned in Vedas and start given about this line that line.He already banned by his islam mullah and if he can say like mohammad has died and we can not take anything from muhammad then why he fallow quran.I also search about mohammad in net and found that he died because of high fiver. As mentioned in quran that He was god messenger and he can not cure by high fiver that how he will help to his fallower.
My thinking is to respect all religion but don’t press and give wrong proof to anyone to join other religion .
You analysis is excellent and thanks a lot for your analysis.
