Mir Baqi is commonly held as the governor of Babur responsible for construction of the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya but no such name exists in the Baburnama or the memoirs of Babur. The only persons with having “Baqi” in their name are Baqi Shaghwal who was the governor of Dipalpur and not the erstwhile Oudh. Apart from him, there is one Baqi Ming-Bashi who is supposedly a junior master of a 1000 men under Chin-Timur Sultan. Then there is one Baqi Tashkandi who is again described as a subordinate of Chin-Timur Sultan. So anyone with the name of Baqi was never the governor or even the commander of the forces at Ayodhya. So there is no possibility of a Mir Baqi constructing a Mosque.
After going through the translation of the Baburnama by Beveridge, one can establish that all these persons are one and the same given the year of reference has been 934 AH which is 1527 AD as per the Gregorian calender. The subordinate status of Baqi is reconfirmed by Babur when he is supposedly sent by him on 16th June 1529 on a reconnaissance mission in search of the Afghan rebels Shaikh Bayazid and Biban. On learning that the two had fled to Mahoba, Baqi is asked by Babur to move to Mahoba on the 20th June 1529. The sudden on setting of the monsoon rains forced Babur to ask his men to halt their movements for the next 4-5 months. On learning this, this fellow Baqi Tashkandi or Baqi Shaghwal asked for Babur’s permission to head back to his home in Uzbekistan which Babur happily obliged. This was attested in the Erskine’s translations of Babarnama as well as the translations by Wheeler M.Thackston as published by Oxford University Press, New York. So this Baqi never visited Ayodhya in all portability. This Baqi Shaghwal was a Mir and a petty commander who was sent on a voluntary retirement from active services after he failed in the assignment against Bayazid Sheikh and Biban in the crucial battle of Lucknow. The disgrace with which Bayazid is dismissed can be gauged from the fact that he was not even given a horse nor was he allowed to appropriate a single penny while Musa, the Afghan warlord and nephew of Bayazid was allowed an allowance of Rupees 30 lakhs when he was asked to retire. The lack of application of common sense when it comes to decipher the existence of Mir Baqi can be gauged from that a ‘Mir’ was a person who lorded around 5000 men while this Baqi Tashkandi or Baqi Shaghwal is a Ming-Bashi i.e. one who commands 1000 men. After his forced forced cum voluntary dismissal from the services, he is nowhere mentioned again in his memoirs.
Now, coming to the people who have the prefix of ‘Mir’ attached to their names in Baburnama are :
1. Mir Ahmed Beg Itaraji Mughal
2.Mir Ali Beg Turk
7.Mir Mohammed-i-Mahdi Khwaja
8.Mir Khurd Bakawal
9.Mir Ali Mir Akhwari
There is no such person with the name of Mir Baqi in the entire book of Babaunama leave alone him being the Governor of Oudh which was a very important province considering its very high revenues that it offered to the state treasury. This is now established that the Mir Baqi mentioned in the civil suit lingering in the Supreme Court is a mere figment of imagination. Now when there is no such person with this name, how can he be credited with creating a Masjid at Ayodhya leave alone demolishing it. So there was no Masjid at the site during the 16th century. The claims of the Muslims hence do not stand any merit. It is a pure figment of imagination that should be disregarded during the trials.
