Vedas and Daas

This entry is part [part not set] of 11 in the series Vedas totally reject Caste System

A common perception is that Daas is a synonym for Shudras and Vedas call for the subjugation of these Daas.

‘Daas’ in Vedic Mantras as ‘verb’

Let us explore some Vedic mantras containing ‘Daas’ in various forms and see what it actually means.

Rigveda 7.1.21: May our noble warriors not become Daas or be destroyed.

Rigveda 6.5.4: One who troubles us by hiding, may he be destroyed (Abhidaasat). Here Daas appears as a verb meaning “to be destroyed.”

Rigveda 7.104.7: May he never be benefited who wants to destroy us (Abhidaasati) with hatred.

Rigveda 10.97.23: May our enemy be destroyed who wants to destroy us (Abhidaasati).
In all these mantras, ‘Daas’ refers to destruction.

‘Das’ Dhatu or root

Many mantras use another form of Daas with root word ‘Das’.

Rigveda 10.117.2: The wealth of a charitable person never gets destroyed (Upadasyati).

Rigveda 5.54.7: Never does the wealth and prosperity of a person get destroyed (Upadasyanti) who is inspired by the Supreme God.

In these mantras, again ‘Daas’ refers to destruction.

It is hence clear that ‘Daas’ means something to do with destruction and hence does not mean any caste or race.

‘Daas’ in Vedic Mantras as ‘noun’

Now let us review some mantras that contain ‘Daas’ word directly.

Rigveda 2.12.4: The Daas person or destructive person should be pulled down.

Rigveda 5.34.6: Arya should control the Daas or destructive persons.

Rigveda 6.26.5: Those Daas, who destroy peace, should be destroyed. Here adjective ‘Shambar’ is used for Daas, which means an adversary of ‘Sham’ or peace.

Rigveda 7.19.2: Control the Daas, Shushnam (looters) and Kuyavam (terrorists) completely.

Rigveda 10.49.6: The sin-incarnate Daas should be destroyed.

Rigveda 10.19.7: The Daas, who is fit for being killed, should be destroyed.

Similarly, Rigveda 4.30.15, Rigveda 4.30.21 and Rigveda 3.12.6 call for the destruction of Daas.

Summary

It is clear that Daas refers to persons with destructive tendencies who deserve to be destroyed in any civilized society. All terrorists are Daas.

There is no reference to Shudra being a Daas in entire Vedas. It is a matter of pity that we forgot the original message of Vedas over the course of history and literally swapped the meaning of Shudra and Daas. Today, Shudra is perceived as an objectionable word while Daas denotes humility.

Nothing could be far from Vedas.

This misinterpretation of word Daas may have happened in the manner how Europeans used to send convicts to Australia, which then became a nation in itself. In a similar way, when criminals were captured, they were put into various tasks. Over the course of history, this Daas or their future generations continued to be called as Daas. Later the word ‘Daas’ started being understood as ‘servant.’

This is also similar to the way ‘Arya’ started calling themselves ‘Hindu,’ which has no reference in any authentic scripture.

In reality, Daas is a synonym of Dasyu or criminal. Shudra is a profession category of Arya or the people who are indulged in benevolent acts. There are 36 mantras in Rigveda having ‘Arya’ word in various forms and all refer to noble, righteous people.

All good citizens of the world including Shudras are Arya!

  1. Well done

excellent work sir, u have opened the eyes of everyone with this article, now hopefully no one will torcher or defame shudras. Vedas are a treasure of truthfull moral righteous knowledge.

    • Even if for argument sake, we take ur word to be true that does not mean we won't have answers to ur questions, we are a new breed ready to take on questions for any quarter. We can start a debate of our own and see who wins this time.

    • Giani Ditt Singh(1853 to 1901). Maharishi Dayanand (1823-1883)

There is a conflict in the time gaps!!! so your claim is false.

Ok. Now I will ask you. If you people call Hindus as Idolaters then who you people are?

You people also bow down before a book, show lights, carry it on a palanquin, fan it, carry umbrella, etc. why? So this is clearly an idolatry.

Guru Nanak don’t know Sanskrit. So he had no right to comment on Vedas. There are 100s of proofs. I can even show that you still worship vaishnav gods. Here is the proof.

You may say, I cannot read Gurmukhi. But I can read and understand Devanagari. I know Sanskrit and Hindi and hence I can decipher the meanings of each and every word. Note that not all the parts in the Granth is written in Punjabi. Many are Braj, Marathi, Hindavi, etc in Gurmukhi script. If you like to debate, let’s do it. I’m ready. So this shows that there are a lot of prima facie points to prove Sikhism is a pure Hindu sect, plain and simple.

      • How pathetic of you mister….. Firstly, you read some book which is published to prove that Sikhs are Hindus. All verses about praihlaad…
Then, There is a Paath by Shri Guru Gobind singh ji… He called, god by around 400 names. Jaap Sahib.. Read that if you can. Just saying that word Ram is written, it does not say that it signifies LORD RAMA… Ram, Hari are all the names by which a sikh can remember God.
A sikh never believes in 330000000 devis and devtaas..
You said why do you worship the book…
Guru Granth sahib is the living guru of Sikhs, as per order of 10th Guru Gobind Singh Ji..
Sab Sikhan ko hukam hai, Guru manyo Granth,
Guru Granth Ji maanyo, Pargat Guran Ki deh…
Jo parbh ko Milbo Chahe, Khoj Shabad me le…
we bow our head as a mark of respect.. because it guides a sikh to live his life truthfully in the love, name of One God-The creator.. We believe in one teacher and One guru…

Now I will cite a small example to tell how a Sikh is being taught some lessons by the Gurus way different than Hindus…
Guru Nanak dev saw a pundit pouring water in the morning to Sun at haridwar. When asked why he was doing so, Pundit told it will reach the Sun..
Guru Nanak dev Turned to west, and poured some water so that it may reach his fields back in Punjab.
Upon seeing this pundit laughed that How can water travel so long back…
and then he was confused himself…

        One last question to you…
What on earth are you trying to prove by saying that Sikhs are Hindus….
Cant your religion have a guts to stand alone with an Identity?

      • @Sikh,
Firstly, I love sokhism and have respects for sikhs as same with buddists and jains.. As I find no new concept or new philosophy in any of them but part of Hinduism in excelled form, and some times going to extreame (like some jains who renounced cloths also)..

You might not know but some pundits (false) took many bribes saying that it will reach the dead, some selfish brahmins did started birth-based caste system ~200B.C and Untouchability ~400 A.D-600A.D. Sati started at pace after Jonhar (After Invasions) and till 18th century many women forced into fire..
        These are some false things…
But some ingnorant pundits did good things but without proper or complete knowledge, like the pundit who wanted to send water to surya..
It no way means that VEDAs told this no way means that Hindu philosophy is worst..

  2. @Singh
Do you know that the same Gyani Ditt Singh was a member of Arya Samaj Lahore till 1888 (after five years of death of Swami Dayanand)? Foolish people start making stories without knowing facts. But sensible people should not believe until they verify such things. If Swami Dayanand was defeated by Gyani Ditt then Swami would have joined Sikhi, but the case was different! Gyani Ditt joined Arya Samaj, and this is the biggest proof of falsity of your claim.

    • The fact that Gyani Ditt Singh became a member of Arya Samaj demolishes the story of deafting Swami Dayanad in Shastrarth. Defeat in Shastrarth results in accepting the stand of one who wins by the other one. But seeing the contrary it is proved beyond doubt that it was actually Gyani Ditt Singh who was influenced by the philosophy of Arya samaj and Vedik Dharama which made him change his stand and accept Arya samaj. Further, Let us not make it a fight rather let it be a healthy, academic debate without being malafide or bad intention. In present time we need to unite and not figt among ourselves. Sikh gurus have contributed a lot towards Hindu religion and the country. Reverved Guru Gobind Singh Ji fought and sacrified for Hindu, Brahmin and cow. The purpoe is not to belittle the sikh Gurus. What we should do is to accept what is true and denounce whatever is false or shortcoming amongst us. with regards and malice towards none.

  3. The brahmins and oother upper castes would be happy if they are made SC/STs in today’s India for getting reservation benefits. Even the Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims want reservation benefits!!

  4. Something is missing here. The article is not presenting a complete picture. The Arya heroic king and leader of the Bharatas is called Sudaas (good daas). His father was divodaasa (daasa of the divinities). So it is clear that the Aryas used the word “daas” for themselves also in a different context. So the root “das” means “to be used up or exhausted”. When it is applied to the Anaryas, it refers to their destruction and being laid waste. When it is applied to Aryas it refers to their being used up completely in the service of Divnity.

  5. dear sir,
i am very happy to know that still people believe in the reality. We are capable to throw the blindfold. We need social revolution, root cause of every bane in our society and country. We are ‘divided and devided further within society then how could we fight corruption, crime and discrimination. A lot to be done but i believe we will be able to do so if we keep stregthen our society and ourselves.

  6. saprema savinaya pranama:
das – means lay waste – ayogavan :who is not leading a life of yoga (yoga means (युज्यते अनेन इति योग:- one who practises a life with a goal)
    regards
    nandhitha
