Frequently asked questions on God
If you have any further questions, kindly post it in the Ask Agniveer section of the site.

A note: A more appropriate word would be Ishwar. But I use the word God for sake of commonplace understanding.

Question: What is God?
There can be a variety of definitions of God. Being limitless and beyond the realm of physical senses, it is difficult to capture the meaning of God in a few words or sentences.A reasonably decent definition would be as foliows: God is (Sachidanand) existent, intelligent and blissful. He is (Nirakaar) formless, (Sarvashaktimaan) all powerful, (Sarvajya) omniscient, (Nyayakari) just, (Dayalu) merciful, (Ajanma) unborn, (Anant) endless, (Nirvikaar) unchangeable & faultless, (Anadi) beginning-less, (Anupam) unequalled, (Sarvadhar) the support of all, (Sarveshwar) the master of all, (Sarvayapak) omnipresent, (Sarvantaryami) immanent, (Ajar) un-aging, (Amar) immortal, (Abhay) fearless, (Nitya) eternal, and (Pavitra) holy, and (Srishtikarta) the maker of all.But that is next step. To begin with, it is sufficient to understand that God is the manager of world around and within. This can be deciphered through a systematic process of evaluation of life and world. And once we are able to initiate this process of analysis, the rest of the adjectives of God would become clear automatically.

Question: Why should one believe in God?
For same reason that we believe in sun, moon, round earth, atom, molecule, heat, electricity etc. We should believe in everything and anything that exists and reject whatever does not exist. The basic principle of life is that Truth=Bliss or Truth liberates. And truth means understanding what exists. Thus we should believe in God because it exists. One can still live the life without believing in electricity. In fact many a tribals indeed do so. But to gain enhanced happiness, it is better that we believe in electricity so that we are able to use it for our purpose. One may say that one could have still be happy if he did not know about electricity. But let me counter-question, would any sane person be eager to exchange all the comforts of electricity with that of life without electricity? Thus, clearly happiness derived from electricity is much higher compared to that without it. This is a basic law of life – that knowledge leads to power and hence higher happiness. This defines the way forward for any sane life. Now, if knowledge of electricity can give so much happiness, imagine what would be the happiness derived from knowing and being able to use the source of highest power – God?

Question: No one ever has seen God. How can you then say that God exists?
No one has ever seen electricity, heat or even sub-atomic particles. No one has ever seen a photon or quark. No one ever saw light wave or heat radiation. Why do we say then, that they exist? We know photon exists because we can see its effects which cannot be explained otherwise. Same is true for electricity, sub-atomic particles, heat and light waves. Exactly! We believe in things because we can see their effects. Eyes are merely approximate tools to sense the world. What we cannot see with eyes can be seen with microscope. But even the most powerful microscope cannot see particles beyond a size. Same is true for other senses like hearing, feeling etc.The whole of modern science, thus is based not on what we see, hear etc, but what can be observed through its effects. And what it does is to create certain models to explain these phenomenon. Thus, all these …….

  1. Guys can u please answer this doubt?

I was just thinking about the omnipresence of god and also about the concept of death according to the VEDAS.
    SOUL has consciousness.
So when it leaves the physical body of a human, the body becomes devoid of consciousness.
The physical dead body of a human dosent posses life OR consciousness due to leaving of the soul from the body .
pleas answer first in short and THEN in detail.
AND can someone please tell me how the starter of AGNIVEER, the IIT IIM guy, begin this journey of truth and how did he end up on The VEDAS?

  2. I want to add one more thing..

“A true search for god begins from an atheist” with an open mind.

So be an atheist first , then use your brain and think “WHO AM I”

LOKA SAMASTHA SUKHINO BHAVANTHU…( May everyone in the world be well)
Thejasveenavadheethamasthu ( May this light spread the entire world)
VASUDHAIVA KUDAMBAKAM ( May the entire world be in peace like a family)

    thank you,

  3. Ishavaasam idam sarvam yat kincha jagatyam jagat…

god is ominpresent, omnipotent but NIRGUNA ( without any attributes)… NIRGUNA PARABRAHMA..
I.e it is impartial, not materialistic….
We are all like waves(atma) of the eternal ocean(parabrahma). The waves are part of the ocean , not separete from it.
Everything follows the laws of karma. Its cause and effect.
Not due to some god sitting abode and controlling as per his wish..

This philosophy is called Advaita vedanta.

    If god is so merciful,
why is innocent children gets raped, murdered ?
why is some people have sufferings while others enjoy ?
Why god allowing so many religions and creating mess in the world ?
    ……so many questions..

Sit in a calm location, be relaxed, Shut your eyes, take a deep breath and
ask the question “WHO AM I ?”
Not your physical “I” , but your atma “I”

For all the inspirations for quantum mechanics is got from vedas and Upanishads.

  4. Isavasyam idam sarvam……. yes, the entire universe is filled with GOD.

If we are spending at least 18 years for education to lead life, how many years we want to know source and creation of life (god). It is not an outward journey, it is coming home. The once knows the self knows the source.

Unfortunately mankind has crossed the IRON AGE and now we are in GARBAGE from the physical view, just because of that our SELF-CULTURE becoming SELF-VOULTURE.

Look at the VEDAS. Read them as if you are not reading them to criticize. One for sure understands the SELF.

    • Each of us has a Rishi within and hence is a messenger. If you talk of Vedas, we know that they are available without any change, have been preserved for ages and no time is known in history when there is any reference of Vedas being created. Hence the people, who in early era of civilization, devised all this were indeed visionary and wanted the message of Vedas to be preserved. They were thus messengers.

      • thanks but are you sure the vedas have been perserved some muslim fantics have tried to claim you are wrong

      • Muslim fanatic is a misnomer. Muslim means humble. Hence a fanatic cannot be muslim. And all humble people of world are muslims. And all fanatics are non-muslims. Anybody who has an agenda to convert people to their faith is a fanatic. They would use all hook and crook to do so. Hence they are not to be taken seriously. That Vedas have been preserved is a separate fact and not the basis of Vedic Dharma. This fact is just like an added feature. Even if someone proves that Vedas are not preserved, still Vedas stand rock-solid as the only rational Dharma for humans. This is because Vedic Dharma is based on reason and self-conscience. It is not based on blind belief in any book, letter or person. So even if you have never read Vedas, you are still Vedic if you genuinely and humbly follow inner voice or reason and rationality. Of course, if you take support of Vedic texts, you accelerate your progress. Tell me, which other religion is so honest enough to proclaim that you need not believe in any unseen prophet, avatar, story, history etc to follow that religion? Which is the religion that accommodates your present beliefs and doesn’t force you to change it to follow that religion? Which other religion adopts this way of mentoring you as per your own efforts rather than forcing a set of beliefs and non-beliefs in brute force manner? So one can be Vedic even if he is atheist, hindu, muslim, christian, jew or whatever. Like all good things of world – air, water, sunlight – Vedic dharma is for one and all without preconditions. This is the unbreakable foundation of Vedic dharma as imbibed in Vedas – the oldest texts. Whether one likes or not, one is following Vedic dharma every moment when he is showing love, compassion, tolerance, doing benevolent acts and being in resonance with nature. We survive because we all beleive in Vedic dharma. More we believe, better will we become.

      • @Agniveer Agni
Agniveer you can not make the people fool. Muslim are those who have firm belief in Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and Quran.

      • Hmmm….So which part of word Muslim means “Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)’ and which part means ‘Quran’? Why should we believe your definition? What was the meaning of Muslim before birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Even Zakir Naik agrees on this point that every humble person is a Muslim. Kindly check his lectures.

      • @Agniveer
You can confirm from any authenticated Saudi Arabia based website. If you are humble but not have firm belief in Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and holy Quran you are not Muslim. To be Muslim one must have firm belief in prophet & Quran and its every word. Zakir Naik is not authority in the matter of Islam. We saudi Arabian Muslim can not take his world as authority. He is just a Joker in subcontinent. I am proud to be descender of Arabs. My great Grand Paa came from Saudi Arabia in 1922.

      • Why should we Indians bow down to Saudi Arabia? is king of Saudi Arabia a prophet that we believe in him? Ask Saudi Arabia to appoint the next Imam of Masjid-ul-Haram of Kaaba from Indian subcontinent and then we will listen to them. We are committed to pride and dignity of our Indian muslim brothers and sisters whom Saudi people treats as second grade citizens.

  6. I reccommend you read the book by D. L. Moody “Closer to the Light.’ about the near death experiences of children. He studied children because they were could more accurately give accounts without having to understand it. In other words they are more unbiasedthan adults.I myself had a near death experience. I accept it for what it was. I had a conversation with God. I pleaded with him to let me live a little while longer. He did. One second after you did you will know.I have my ticket to heaven now.I don’t want to miss the train do you?

    • @Debra Blackwell : Debra, i have no doubt that you were granted what you wished coz he the ESHWAR is all merciful and all benign, had you had the knowlede of the Veda and the Upnishadas you would not have asked for more time to live, you would have asked “Do as you wish as i am your child and let me be with you ” There is no heaven and i am sure in your conversation heaven wouldnt have been mentioned, its your assumption, and for sure “There is no train to Miss”
Om Tat Sat Brahmh Arapn Astu
Prayer : “You are the only truth and i wish whatever i do is an oblation(acceptable) to you”

    • @Debra

surprising and ironic that despite seeing the light at the end of the tunnel …you chose the tunnel at the end of light !!

for you it’s already a case of paradise lost 🙁

Allah can forgive any greatest sin but not the person who have no belief in him. Ultimate purpose of life to worship Allah. Everyone should worship allah all five times as holy prophet (SAW) guided us.

what does god lose ?? its not like god’s ego gets hurt if someone doesnt pray him nor does he lose anything mental or physical, so why will he be angry/offended , y does he curse/punish the unbelievers {like a small kid from whom a toy is taken away}. isnt he just like many demi-gods or maybe a devil or some mafia gang leader?? what does ur demi-/human-like god want from us humans that he desparately need us humans to worship him ?? filling up paradises so that he can hav some company and not feel lonely?? or feel proud when someone prays him?? what a stupid god .
i guess all desert bloc religions and their gods r stupid to the core.

      • @abhi
If you not worship allah by reciting Shahada all five times your purpose of existence null and void. Allah created you to worship him. If you do not worship, allah punish you eternally to teach the lesson other believers and non believers.

      • Comedian George Carlin “… Religion has actually convinced people that there’s an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever ’til the end of time!

        But He loves you….”

  8. Albert Einstein(14 March 1879-18 April 1955 (aged 76))

In a 1954 letter to Eric Gutkind Einstein wrote:[15]
… The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this. These … interpretations are highly manifold according to their nature and have almost nothing to do with the original text. For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions. And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong and with whose mentality I have a deep affinity have no different quality for me than all other people. As far as my experience goes, they are also no better than other human groups, although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise I cannot see anything 'chosen' about them.
Einstein had previously explored this belief that man could not understand the nature of God when he gave an interview to Time Magazine explaining:-
I'm not an atheist. I don't think I can call myself a pantheist. The problem involved is too vast for our limited minds. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn't know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. We see the universe marvelously arranged and obeying certain laws but only dimly understand these laws.

  9. Thomas Edison(February 11, 1847-October 18, 1931 (aged 84))

Historian Paul Israel has characterized Edison as a "freethinker".[26] Edison was heavily influenced by Thomas Paine's The Age of Reason.[26] Edison defended Paine's "scientific deism", saying, "He has been called an atheist, but atheist he was not. Paine believed in a supreme intelligence, as representing the idea which other men often express by the name of deity."[26] In an October 2, 1910 interview in the New York Times Magazine, Edison stated:
Nature is what we know. We do not know the gods of religions. And nature is not kind, or merciful, or loving. If God made me — the fabled God of the three qualities of which I spoke: mercy, kindness, love — He also made the fish I catch and eat. And where do His mercy, kindness, and love for that fish come in? No; nature made us — nature did it all — not the gods of the religions.[57]
Edison was called an atheist for those remarks, and although he did not allow himself to be drawn into the controversy publicly, he clarified himself in a private letter: "You have misunderstood the whole article, because you jumped to the conclusion that it denies the existence of God. There is no such denial, what you call God I call Nature, the Supreme intelligence that rules matter. All the article states is that it is doubtful in my opinion if our intelligence or soul or whatever one may call it lives hereafter as an entity or disperses back again from whence it came, scattered amongst the cells of which we are made."[26]
Nonviolence was key to Edison's moral views, and when asked to serve as a naval consultant for World War I, he specified he would work only on defensive weapons and later noted, "I am proud of the fact that I never invented weapons to kill." Edison's philosophy of nonviolence extended to animals as well, about which he stated: "Nonviolence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages."[58]

  10. Views of the western scientists on The supreme Bieng

    Isaac Newton(4 January 1643 – 31 March 1727 (aged 84))

“Tis inconceivable that inanimate brute matter should (without the mediation of something else which is not material) operate upon & affect other matter without mutual contact.”[18]
“ Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who set the planets in motion. God governs all things and knows all that is or can be done.[8]
This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent Being. […] This Being governs all things, not as the soul of the world, but as Lord over all; and on account of his dominion he is wont to be called "Lord God" παντοκρατωρ [pantokratōr], or "Universal Ruler". […] The Supreme God is a Being eternal, infinite, [and] absolutely perfect.[4]
Opposition to godliness is atheism in profession and idolatry in practice. Atheism is so senseless and odious to mankind that it never had many professors.[20] ”

  11. dear Mr. X2_in,
besides what was the need to kill and maim innocent people and keep their wives as sex slaves, marrying six year old girl…list goes on and on and on.. in name of God. Is God that handicapped that he can't even punish Himself, rather than using an illetrate to do mass-murders and sex-crimes.

  12. Please read “Muslims only say that when they say “La Ilaha”(There is no evidence).” as “Muslims only say that when they say “La Ilaha”(There is no God)”. Typo is regretted.

  13. @X2-IN
“My first question to the atheist will be: “What is the definition of God?” For a person to say there is no God, he should know what is the meaning of God.”
yOU HAVE got the whole concept of “atheism” wrong. Atheists never say” There is no God.” Muslims only say that when they say “La Ilaha”(There is no evidence). What atheists say is “There is no evidence for existence of God.”
