Lets learn Vedic Worship – True Hinduism

This entry is part 2 of 7 in the series Vedic Lessons

We shall continue from previous summary on Vedic God where we had briefly described benefits of worship of Ishwar as follows:

Q: Should we worship Ishwar or not? Why? After all He never forgives!

A: Ishwar should be worshipped and He alone should be worshipped.
It is true that by worship of Ishwar, you will not receive any shortcut pass certificate when you have actually failed. Only lazy and cheaters desire such unscrupulous means to success.
The benefits of worship of Ishwar are different:
a. By worship of Ishwar one is able to understand Ishwar and His creation better.
b. By worship, one is able to better understand His properties and adopt those in his own life. This enhances one’s personality, annihilates the source of future sins, encourages virtues of truth and compassion and comes closer to truth and bliss.
c. By worship, one is able to hear ‘inner voice’ better and get constant clearer guidance from Him.
d. By worship, one eradicates ignorance, gains strength and is able to withstand toughest challenges in life with confidence and aplomb.
e. Ultimately, one is able to remove ignorance completely and achieve Moksha or salvation with ultimate bliss.
I would like to add one more reason for worship.
– Ishwar has done so much for us and continues to do so endlessly. And hence it is natural for us to thank Him in same manner as we thank our mortal parents for their blessings. Only an unfortunate selfish person would not demonstrate his gratitude and lose opportunity to purify his or her heart.
Please note that worship does not mean some mechanical recitations or blankness of mind. It is a proactive approach to imbibe wisdom through actions, knowledge and contemplation.

Q: How should we worship Ishwar?

A: Basically worship of Ishwar lies in each act that we perform in our life. True worship implies following the ‘inner voice’ on a continuous basis. This is called living life of Yajna – selfless acts dedicated only to noble purposes.
This is called worship through actions. However to ensure that one conducts his life purely in a noble manner without deviations, one has to practice on two more aspects:
a. Seeking knowledge
b. Contemplation on the knowledge to imbibe the same as part of our sanskaars.
The trio of Knowledge-Contemplation-Actions go hand in hand and are fruitless in isolation.
For this lesson, we shall focus on specific aspects of ‘Contemplation’. But please note that this assumes that the rest of the two components – Knowledge and Actions are also being utilized in sync. Henceforth, when we refer to worship in this lesson, we would imply only the component of ‘contemplation’ for ease of communication.

Q: What are the key components of Worship?

A: There are three major components:
– Stuti or Glorification
– Prarthana or Prayer
– Upasana or Yogic Practice
In this article, we shall mainly focus on Stuti and Prarthna. We shall also cover Upasana in brief. However this science would demand greater exposition.
Please note that these are not exclusive of each other however.

Q: Explain Stuti in more detail.

A: ‘Stuti’ or Glorification means stating the correct attributes/properties of any entity in most truthful manner. Hence ‘false buttering (makhanbaazi)’ of anything as well as ‘unreasonable condemnation’ are both not Stuti.
The purpose of Stuti of Ishwar is to understand the properties of Ishwar and attempt to model our own nature and actions in sync with Him. For example just as Ishwar is just and kind, we should also be just and kind. Ishwar never gives up, and hence we should also not give up.
One who merely sings the virtues of Ishwar like a drama artist but does not put effort in changing his or her own character is simply wasting time. Because Ishwar is not a narcissist dictator who enjoys being praised. Whatever Stuti we do is solely for our own benefit by improving our own self.
There are two types of Stuti:

Saguna Stuti

Glorification by remembering and understanding those attributes of Ishwar that are present in Him. For example, He is eternal and pure.

Nirguna Stuti

Glorification by remembering and understanding those attributes that are NOT present in Ishwar. For example, He has no form and He is never born.
The difference is merely of semantics and not the fundamentals.

Q: Can you present some mantras from Vedas having Stuti of ishwar?

A: Ishwar is the main subject of Vedas. Hence a large number of mantras having Stuti of Ishwar are part of Vedas. For example:
Yajurveda 40.8:
He is present in everything, fastest and most powerful, pure, omniscient, knows everything, master of all, eternal, self-sufficient and guides us all with knowledge of Vedas. (This is Saguna Stuti)
He is without body, never takes birth, has no nerves or gaps, does not conduct sin, is separate from pain and miseries. (This is Nirguna Stuti)
Atharvaveda 10.8.1 and 10.7.32-34
He knows what has happened in past, what is happening currently and what can happen in future in most perfect manner. He manages the entire world through this knowledge and is master of us all. He is bliss Himself and completely away from sorrow! He is the greatest and we bow to Him!
He created the earth where we dwell and the universe as well as all those bodies which give us light. He is the greatest and we bow to Him!
He creates the sun and the moon in every cycle of creation. He also creates the fire for our benefit. He is the greatest and we bow to Him!
He creates the air we breathe in and the air we breathe out. He creates the light through which we see. He has created and managed everything in all the ten directions in a marvelous integrated fashion so that we are benefited utmost. He is the greatest and we bow to Him!
Yajurveda 25.13
He provides the power of knowledge to our souls. He provides us all true wisdom and bliss. All scholars worship Him and Him alone. The intelligent ones follow His directions as provided in Vedas to obtain continuous bliss and achieve salvation. Surrender to Him alone is freedom from miseries and deviating away from Him by indulging in misdeeds alone is reason for being trapped in cycles of death again and again. Hence we should worship Him and Him alone who is the very definition of Bliss and Happiness!

Q: What do you mean by Prarthana or Prayer?

A: To request for support from Ishwar after we have put our best efforts for a noble purpose is called Prayer. Neither is it a prayer when we request help for a sinful purpose nor it is a prayer when we request so without having put the best we can. Prayer is neither for the wicked nor for the lazy ones.
Thus:
1. Whatever we pray from Ishwar, we should adopt the same in our lives as well. For example, if we pray for knowledge, we should also put the best efforts to seek knowledge. Prayers make sense ONLY AFTER due effort has been put. Expecting free lunch is mark of beggars, not worshippers of God who Himself never lazes even for a while. Hence, make the due payment and then request your lunch.
2. Wicked prayers bring opposite results because they pollute one’s mind and cause him to invite even more miseries. For example, Ishwar rejects prayers like –
“O Ishwar, destroy my enemy and make me the most powerful and glorious.”  Because if both the enemies would pray for the same, should Ishwar destroy them both?
If someone argues that one who prays more sincerely out of two should be heard by Ishwar, then by this logic, one who prays slightly less sincerely should cause at least some damage, though lesser, to his enemy! This is utter foolishness.
3. Similarly if one prays like “O Ishwar, make Chapati for us, please clean my house, wash my clothes, harvest my crops etc”, he is simply a fool.
In Yajurveda 40.2, Ishwar orders us: “Live for 100 years and even more only by putting best efforts and never ever be lazy.” Those who ignore this order of Ishwar can never achieve happiness, how so much noble they may be in other qualities.
Hard-work or Purusharth is the MOST IMPORTANT characteristic to imbibe in life. All the rest of noble qualities assume that Purusharth is already in place.
In other words, fortune favors the brave.
4. We give job only to those who work, not to lazy ones. Only one who has eyes and wants to see can be shown something. Taste of sugar is obtained only by obtaining sugar and eating it, not by merely saying “Sugar is sweet”. Similarly, only one who puts best efforts in noble activities eventually achieves the Sugar sooner or later.

Q: Can you provide some mantras from Vedas on prayer of Ishwar?

A: In fact many! Read them carefully and enjoy the most blissful activity in life – Prayer to Ishwar. But make sure, you are doing your homework by putting best continuous relentless enthused efforts.
Yajurveda 32.14
O Agni (Enlightening Ishwar), Bless us with same intellect through which Yogis and Scholars worship you. And provide us that intellect right now! We promise to surrender our everything to you without any selfishness. After all you are the source of everything that we possess! (Refer Power of Now for detailed explanation of this mantra)
Yajurveda 19.9
You are brilliant, provide us with brilliance as well.
You are infinitely brave and courageous, provide us with same courage and bravery.
You are all-powerful, make us also strong and powerful in mind and body.
You are fully capable, make us also capable.
You show wrath over crimes and criminals. Make us also cultivate the habit of showing same anger over crimes and criminals.
You tolerate all praise or criticism. Make us also strong enough to ignore praise or criticism and focus only on our goal.
In other words, help us steer away from evil towards goodness.
Yajurveda 34.1-6 (Shiva Sankalpa Mantras)
O most lovable Ishwar! With your blessings, my mind goes far away in all forms of knowledge while awake. Even during sleep, it performs similarly. May my powerful mind gifted by you stays away from all sins and have only pure thoughts always. May I always think for welfare of everyone and never ever do I desire harm for anyone.
O knower of all, this mind propels patient scholars and noble people to continuously do noble deeds and fight evil. This mind has tremendous potential and can stay immersed in welfare of all living beings. May such a noble mind always steer away from sins and desire only virtuous thoughts.
This mind provides all great knowledge. It illuminates one and all and helps us make right decisions. Not even a single task can be accomplished without its support. May such a great mind always remain immersed in noble thoughts and away from evil desires.
The yogis know the past, present and future through this mind. This mind helps us unite with Ishwar and seek ultimate knowledge. This mind works together with 5 senses, soul and intellect to conduct virtuous deeds. May such a noble mind always remain pure and for welfare of all.
The knowledge of 4 Vedas – Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, Atharvaveda – lay embedded in the mind in same manner as spokes are attached to center of a wheel. This mind is testimony of existence of Ishwar who is always within it and around it. May such a mind remain always dedicated to noble deeds so that I am able to discover the knowledge of Vedas that lies within me, by eradicating all ignorance.
The mind controls the acts of humans like the charioteer controls the horses with strings. It is extremely fast and stays with me always. May such a mind always seek welfare and noble thoughts for all and never ever dwell into sins.
Yajurveda 40.16
O provider of bliss, self-illuminating, omniscient Ishwar, May you provide us with right intellect. May you steer us away from sinful activities. We pray again and again to you to purify our thoughts, words and actions.
Yajurveda 16.15
O Rudra (One who causes evil people to cry and face miseries)! Please guide us all so that none of us harm our younger ones, our elders, our parents, creatures in wombs, our loved ones and all innocent harmless living beings. Guide us away from the path that would cause us to face your punishments.
Shatpath Brahman 14.3.1.30
May we reject the path of falsehood and progress towards truth. May we reject the path of darkness and progress towards enlightenment. May we reject the path of death and seek eternal immortality in form of salvation. O Ishwar! Please be our guide!
Yajurveda 2.10
O affluent Ishwar! Kindly stabilize me into a healthy body, healthy sense organs and a very noble mind with good habits. Please help us make our country stronger, powerful and prosperous. May our noble wishes always become true and we seek only conduct of noble deeds. May we establish a powerful Chakravarti sovereign nation and establish the rule of justice. May we be able to fight away all the forces of corruption, fraud, treachery that plague my country.
Rigveda 1.39.2
May we be strong always. May our weapons – guns, cannons, ammunitions etc – be always ready and top notch. May our weapons and strength be able to defeat all the evil forces desiring to harm innocent people and stop the might of their armies. May our indisputable power, valor and courage help us establish a sovereign, powerful, prosperous and just nation so that all forces of corruption, treachery, fraud and crimes keep getting defeated by us. But this prayer of ours is only for us when we are on path of truth, compassion, justice and nobility. Those who desire so but are fraud, treacherous, unjust and criminals would always suffer mightiest defeats by Ishwar’s grace. Hence we should only indulge in noble deeds.
Yajurveda 38.14
May we only desire doing noble deeds. May our body be always strong and powerful through good healthy food. May we be relentlessly making efforts. May we be able to understand Vedas and apply that knowledge for our benefit. May we have Brahmins (scholars) who provide us good knowledge. May we have brave Kshatriyas (warriors) so that we establish a power nation and destroy fraud forces within and outside our country. May we have experts who help enhance Science and Technology and develop planes, vehicles, useful gadgets, machines etc. May we always remain on path of justice alone. May we harbor no enmity with any living being. May we have powerful nation, tremendous prosperity and noble virtues.
Yajurveda 18.29
May we surrender our everything to the Ishwar who is our mother, father, friend and guru – our entire life, our life force, our sense organs, our efforts, our happiness, our soul, our enlightenment and knowledge, results of our actions, our sacrifices, our glorifications, our emotions, greatest of our achievements – everything. Because Ishwar is source of everything we possess. In other words, achieving Ishwar be the sole purpose of whatever we think or do in life. This ultimate surrender or Samarpan be the mantra of our lives!
May we consider only Him as our ruler and refuse to accept any other dynasty, person or party as our ruler. May we follow only the laws made by Him and not follow human-made norms if they go against orders of Ishwar. May we unite together to thwart those forces that force us to accept them as our rulers instead of Ishwar. In other words, may we all unite together, never fight against each other and follow only truth in thoughts, words and actions.
Let we be guided by te Supreme and not whims of any one individual or set of incompetents.

Q: What do you mean by Upasana?

A: Upasana means to come closer to Ishwar. In other words, Upasana implies the efforts we make to understand Ishwar better so that we may think, act and speak as per His directions. Thus all those activities that we need to conduct to come closer to Ishwar and realize Him by direct evidence comes under ‘Upasana’.
The one who has destroyed all seeds of ignorance and has come closer to Ishwar through Upasana he or she derives a level of happiness and bliss that cannot be expressed in words but can only be felt within.

Q: How do we do Upasana?

A: This is a long subject and forms the basis of Yoga Darshan. We shall provide very brief details here and take this topic in further details sometime later.

But as Step 1 of Upasana:

following needs to be done. Note that this is a must and rest of the methods of Upasana make sense ONLY when the student is putting his best efforts on this first step. It has two components:

Yama

Ahimsa (Non-Violence)- No hatred or enmity against anyone. Only feeling of compassion.
Satya (Truth)- Seeking to accept truth and reject falsehood to best of one’s knowledge.
Asteya (Non-Theft) – To reject whatever is not rightfully yours.
Brahmacharya (Morality) – To cultivate self-control, not be lecherous, keep sense and work organs under control.
Aprigraha (Humility) – To be humble and without any false ego.

Niyama

Shauch (Purity) – Purity of mind and good hygiene practices.
Santosh (Satisfaction) – Putting best efforts towards conduct of noble deeds regardless of failures, successes, glory or insult without being lazy with full happiness and enthusiasm.
Tapa (Efforts) – To ignore pleasure and pain in path of Ishwar and keep putting efforts.
Swadhyaya (Contemplation) – Constant efforts to increase knowledge, seek good company and understanding Ishwar and meaning of Om etc.
Ishwar Pranidhan (Complete surrender to Ishwar) – Simply submitting the will to path of Ishwar.
After these basics have been understood, we actually become eligible to enter into the academy of Yoga.
Note that it does not mean that only after you have mastered these is that next step can begin. Because these steps themselves contain essence of entire Upasana process. But to take next steps, you should at least understand these and keep working on these genuinely. You may fail but should always rise up again even more resolved to master these Yama and Niyama.
We shall discuss the next steps in detail later.

Q: How do we conduct an Upasana session?

A: Whenever one desires to do Upasana, he or she should
– Seek a relatively isolated place
– Sit in a stable position
– Practice some pranayams (breathing methods to control the mind)
(Not the Anulom Vilom and Kapalbhati popular these days. They are merely physical exercises having nothing to do with Yoga as wrongly asserted. For correct Pranayams refer Chapter 2 of Satyarth Prakash.)
– Focus on any body part of body center line like solar plexus, throat, center of eyes, back, head, center of rib cage etc to bring the mind away from world around into singular focus.
– Start contemplating on Ishwar and our relation with Him. Gradually move towards an emotional connect with Ishwar and immerse into His bliss. Let go of rest of the world. Even if wandering thoughts come, simply ignore in same manner as you ignore mosquitoes when enjoying beautiful music.
– Resolve to remove weaknesses and sinful thoughts and resolve to make yourself pure RIGHT NOW!

Q: What are the benefits of Upasana?

A: We have listed out some benefits in beginning of the lesson. Here are some more:
– One who practices Upasana very rapidly increases the purity of his or her mind and makes it truth-oriented. Since truth=bliss, this makes him enjoy the life significantly more than rest of his peers.
– Gradually this truth=bliss leads him to ultimate bliss of salvation where no misery remains further. There is no state better than this to be achieved.
– One who remains committed to Ishwar 24x7x365 always, continues progressing towards more and more happiness and pleasures in life. He becomes much much more capable, alert, enthused and successful person among his peers who do not do Upasana.
– In summary Upasana makes one most successful both materially and spiritually. After all Ishwar alone is source of all material and spiritual happiness!
– Just as a shivering person in chilling winter feels comfort only when he gets closer to fire, similarly, by getting closer to Ishwar, all the sins of soul get destroyed, his nature, actions and tendencies become in sync with Ishwar and hence he achieves ultimate purity and happiness.
– Upasana of Ishwar will make one’s will-power so strong that he or she would be able to withstand such great challenges in life that may seem impossible for others. When faced with toughest situations in life, such a person would still be able to keep his calm and come out of it successfully. What can be greater wonder to be achieved in human life!
– Further one who does not worship Ishwar is foolish as well as shamelessly thankless. Because none else could ignores the One who gave us such tremendous happiness by creating entire world and is continuously supporting us.
Just think of what treatment we rightfully accord to such ungrateful, selfish and foolish people who disown their own parents!
This in summary is the essence of Vedic concept of Ishwar!
May we all earth-dwellers worship the blessing Ishwar constantly with unanimity in our hearts and togetherness among us all.
Yajurveda 30.3: O Ishwar! You provide us with enlightenment and bliss. You create and manage the entire world! We request you to keep us away from sorrow as well as the evil desires that is the cause of all sorrows. And please lead us to whatever is virtuous, noble, truthful and beneficial for all. May we have only purity within us and ward off all evil thoughts and obtain material bliss like powerful just nation, healthy body as well as spiritual bliss of salvation through our efforts guided by you!
Om Shantih Shantih Shantih!
Let us now enjoy a daily Vedic prayer!

The Vedic God

This entry is part 1 of 7 in the series Vedic Lessons

Note: By ‘God’ we imply Ishwar or the Supreme Entity and NOT ‘Devata’. ‘Devata’ is a different term but often wrongly considered to mean ‘Supreme Entity’.
While Ishwar is also a ‘Devata’, any entity – living or non-living – that helps us or is useful for us is termed ‘Devata’. But that does not mean every entity is Ishwar and should be worshipped. To avoid confusion, we shall use the term ‘Ishwar’ in this article.
The Supreme One who represents selflessness, controls the entire universe, is present everywhere and is the Devata of all Devatas, alone is source of bliss. Those who do not understand Him remain drenched in sorrow and those who realize Him achieve unconditional happiness. (Rigveda 1.164.39)

Q: How many Ishwar are there in Vedas? We heard there are huge number of Ishwar in Vedas.

A: You have heard from wrong sources. Vedas clearly specify that there is One and only One Ishwar. And there is no mantra in Vedas that can be interpreted to imply multiple Ishwars.
Not only this, Vedas also refuse existence of any angel or Prophet or incarnation who is necessarily required to act as an agent between You and Ishwar.
To give a rough analogy:
Ishwar of Vedas = God of Christianity minus the concept of Trinity minus the necessity to surrender to Jesus
Ishwar of Vedas = Allah of Islam minus the necessity to accept Muhammad as final Prophet.
In other words, If someone says first part of Shahada : lâ ilâha illallâh (There is no other God except one and only Allah) but rejects the second part : Muḥammadur rasûlullâh (Muhammad is his messenger), that is close to concept of Vedic God.
In Islam, it is Shirk or greatest sin to worship anything except Allah. If you take this concept further and also refuse to accept any Muhammad or Gabriel as necessary to be remembered apart from Allah, you are avoiding Shirk as per Vedas.

Q: What about the various Gods or Devatas mentioned in Vedas? What about 33 crore Gods?

A:
1. As mentioned earlier, Devata refers to entities that are useful for us. But nowhere it is mentioned in Vedas that we should worship these entities. Of course, Ishwar is the Devata or Devatas and hence called ‘Mahadeva’. He alone is to be worshipped.
2. The Vedas refer to not 33 crore Devatas but 33 types (Koti in Sanskrit) of Devatas. They are explained in Shatpath Brahman very clearly. These include –
8 Vasus (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Sky, Moon, Sun, Stars/ Planets) that form components of universe where we live,
10 Life Forces in our body or Prana (Prana, Apana, Vyana, Udana, Samaana, Naga, Kurma, Kukala, Devadatta) and 1 Soul called Rudra,
12 Aditya or months of year,
1 Vidyut or Electromagnetic force that is of tremendous use to us
1 Yajna or constant noble selfless deeds done by humans
The master of these 33 Devatas is the Mahadeva or Ishwar who alone is to be worshipped as per 14th Kanda of Shatpath Brahman.
The concept of 33 Devatas is a great research based subject in itself and requires in-depth study for proper understanding. However, it has been made very clear in all Vedic texts that they are NOT Ishwar and hence NOT to be worshipped.
3. Ishwar has huge number of properties. Ignorant people wrongly consider these properties of Ishwar to be different Ishwars. For example, in today’s newspaper there were 2 headlines – One referred to Dr Singh and other to Manmohan. That does not mean India has two Prime Ministers!
4. To dispel such confusions, there are several mantras in Vedas that clearly state that there is One and Only One Ishwar without any assistants, agents, prophets or juniors to liaison between Him and Us. For example:
Yajurveda 40.1:
This entire world is embedded within and managed by the One and Only One Ishwar. Never dare do any injustice or desire riches through unjust means. Instead follow the righteous path and enjoy His bliss. After all He alone is source of all bliss!
Rigveda 10.48.1:
Ishwar alone is omnipresent and manager of entire universe. He alone provides victory and eternal cause of world. All souls should look up only to Him in same manner as children look up to their Father. He alone provides for our sustenance and bliss.
Rigveda 10.48.5
Ishwar enlightens the entire world. He is undefeated and undying. He is the creator of the world. All souls should seek bliss through seeking knowledge and acting thereupon. They should never shun the friendship of Ishwar.
Rigveda 10.49.1
Ishwar alone provides true knowledge to truth seekers. He alone is promoter of knowledge and motivates virtuous people into noble actions to seek bliss. He alone is the creator and manager of the world. Hence never worship anyone else except one and only Ishwar.
Yajurveda 13.4
There is One and only One Creator and Maintainer of the entire world. He alone is sustaining the earth, sky and other heavenly bodies. He is Bliss Himself! He alone deserves to be worshipped by us.
Atharvaveda 13.4.16-21
He is neither two, nor three, nor four, nor five, nor six, nor seven, nor eight, nor nine, nor ten. He is, on contrary, One and Only One. There is no Ishwar except Him. All devatas reside within Him and are controlled by Him. So He alone should be worshipped, none else.
Atharvaveda 10.7.38
Ishwar alone is greatest and worth being worshipped. He is the source of all knowledge and activities.
Yajurveda 32.11
Ishwar resides at each point in universe. No space is devoid of Him. He is self-sustaining and does not need help of any agent, angel, prophet or incarnation to perform His duties. The soul which is able to realize this One and only One Ishwar achieves Him and enjoys unconditional ultimate bliss or Moksha.
There are innumerable such mantras in Vedas that explain One and Only One Ishwar and instructs us to worship Him directly without invoking any other entity – Incarnation, Prophet, Angel or Agent.

Q: How do you establish existence of Ishwar?

A: Through direct and indirect evidences.

Q: But direct evidence of Ishwar cannot be possible. How do you then establish Ishwar?

A:
1. Evidence means the clear knowledge determined through stimuli received from sense organs. But note that sense organs capture the properties and not the ’cause of these properties’.
For example, when you read this article, you do not capture existence of Agniveer, but only certain images coming on your screen that you interpret into meaningful knowledge. And then you conclude that there has to be some writer of this article and claim that you have evidence of existence of Agniveer. So this is ‘indirect evidence’ even though it appears ‘direct’.
Similarly, this whole creation that we observe via its properties through sense organs imply existence of Ishwar.
2. When you can link a sensory input directly to an entity, you claim to have ‘direct evidence’. For example when you eat a mango, you feel the property of sweetness and associate it with the mango that you consumed. What is important is that you can associate such ‘direct evidence’ ONLY with specific sense organ that was used to observe that property.
Thus in previous example, you cannot have ‘direct evidence’ of mango through ‘ears’ but only through ‘tongue’ or ‘nose’ or ‘eyes’.
Also in reality this is also ‘indirect evidence’ though we term it ‘direct evidence’ for sake of simplicity.
Now since Ishwar is the most subtle entity existing, it is impossible to have ‘direct evidence’ of Ishwar through coarse sense organs like eyes, nose, tongue, skin or ears. For example we cannot see subatomic particles even through most powerful microscopes, we cannot hear ultrasonic sound, we cannot feel the touch of each individual molecule.
In other words, Ishwar is impossible to be evidenced through these coarse and weak sense organs just as mango cannot be sensed through ears or subatomic particles cannot be sensed through any sense organ for that matter.
3. The only organ that can sense Ishwar is mind or Mana. When mind is fully controlled and devoid of involuntary disturbances (like thousands of thoughts coming all the time) and adequate knowledge about properties of Ishwar has been obtained through study and practice, Ishwar can be evidenced directly through intellect in same manner as a mango is evidenced through its taste.
This is the goal of life and this is what a Yogi attempts to do through all the various methods of mind control that include cultivating traits like non-violence, truth-seeking, compassion, seeking bliss for all, high moral character, fighting against injustice, unity among people, etc etc.
4. In a way we get hints of direct evidence of Ishwar everyday in our life. When we try to indulge in any wrong act like theft, cheating, brutality, we hear that faint ‘inner voice’ in form of fear, shame, doubt etc. And when we indulge in noble deeds like helping others, blessing a child etc, we again hear that ‘inner voice’ in form of fearlessless, sense of satisfaction, enthusiasm and feeling of bliss.
This ‘inner voice’ is from Ishwar. Often we reduce its audibility by trying to silence it through loud DJ Music of stupid tendencies around. But then we all at times feel this ‘inner voice’ getting louder now and then, when things are relatively silent.
5. And when the soul purifies itself from mental disturbances and gets away from the DJ club, it is able to directly evidence itself as well as Ishwar.
Hence both through direct and indirect evidence, Ishwar is established as clearly as other entities witnessed by us.

Q: Where does Ishwar live?

1. Ishwar is omnipresent and hence resides everywhere. Had Ishwar been living at a particular place like some special sky or on some special throne, He could not have been omniscient, omnipotent, manager of all, creator of all and destructor of all. You cannot perform actions at a place where you are not present.
2. If you say that Ishwar manages the world from one place just like sun illuminates earth from far off or you watch TV through remote control, this is defective logic. Because sun is able to illuminate the earth or remote control is able to operate the TV only through radiation waves that travel through the interim space. Just because we are unable to see them we call it remote control. In reality there is nothing like a remote control. Thus the very fact that Ishwar is able to manage something implies that it is present there to manage it.
3. Further, if Ishwar is omnipotent, why would He be scared to restrict Himself to a small space. This makes Ishwar limited. Christians say God is on 4th sky and Muslims say that Allah is on 7th sky. And their followers keep fighting each other to prove themselves right. Is it that God and Allah decided to live in separate skies so that they also do not start fighting like their angry followers?
In reality these are childish talks. When Ishwar is All-Powerful and controls entire universe, there is no reason why He would be scared to limit himself to a small part of universe. And if He is, he cannot be termed All-Powerful.

Q: Does it mean Ishwar is also in dirty things like alcohol, urine, excreta?
A:
1. The entire creation is within Ishwar. Because Ishwar is also outside these things but these things do not exist outside Ishwar. So all things in world are pervaded by Ishwar. To give a very rough analogy, we are within Ishwar in similar manner as a pice of cloth within tub of water. There is water within, outside and all around the cloth. There is no portion of cloth which is not wet with water but there is water beyond the cloth as well.
2. Anything is dirty or good for us depending upon our duty towards it. The same set of atoms that form the tasty mango we eat is so lovely for us. But when the atoms disintegrate, interact with other chemicals and form excreta, that becomes dirty for us. But in essence all these are merely different combinations of particles of nature. Since we have a mission on this earth, we analyze each thing with regards to the mission and accept some/ reject rest. What we reject is dirty or trash for us and what we accept is good for us. But for God, such duty does not exist and hence nothing is dirty for Him. On contrary, His duty is different from ours – to help us achieve bliss in just manner – and hence nothing in His entire creation is untouchable for Him.
3. If you look from another analogy, Ishwar is not like a pampered social worker who would prefer to plan remotely in his air-conditioned office but would desist from visiting the slums where actual social work has to be done. He, on contrary, exists to manage the most dirty of the places for our benefit.
4. And since He alone is most perfect, despite He being everywhere and everything being within Him, He is separate and different from these things.

Q: Is Ishwar Kind and Just?

A: Yes. He is the epitome of kindness and justice.

Q: But these are opposite traits. Kindness means to forgive a criminal. And justice means giving punishment to criminal. How can both exist at same time?

A: Kindness and Justice are basically one and same. Because both serve the same purpose.
1. Kindness does not mean forgiving a criminal. Because if that be done, several innocent people would become victims. Thus unless justice is meted out to a criminal, one cannot be kind to innocents. It will also be not justice to the criminal because he would not be prevented from further crimes.
For example, if a dacoit is forgiven, he would harm several innocent people. And if he is imprisoned, it would not only prevent harm to innocents but also allow him opportunity to improve himself and not do further crimes. So in justice alone lies kindness for one and all.
2. In reality, kindness refers to the purpose of Ishwar and justice to the process. When Ishwar punishes a criminal, He does it to prevent the criminal from doing further crimes. And he also prevents innocent people from getting punished for no offense of theirs. Thus the entire purpose of justice is kindness to all.
3. As per Vedas, and observation, the source of sorrow is ignorance which causes one to do wrong acts called crimes. So when a soul does such wrong acts, Ishwar restricts his freedom to do crimes and allows him opportunities to remove his ignorance and remove sorrow.
4. Mere saying sorry is not sufficient to receive pardon of Ishwar. The source of sin or crimes is ignorance and until that is removed, the soul would continue to get rightful punishments or rewards for its actions every moment throughout several births and deaths. And the purpose of all this justice is His kindness towards the soul to gift it with ultimate bliss.

Q: Does that mean, Ishwar will never pardon my sins? Islam or Christianity are better. There, if I confess or say sorry, all my past records are deleted and I am given fresh opportunity.

A:
1. Ishwar does pardon your sins. His pardon lies in the just results of your actions that He provides and not in deleting your past records.
2. If He were to delete your past records, He would be doing greatest injustice and brutality to you. Because in this case, He has allowed you to be promoted to next class even when you have not gained the competence to pass the present class. And in process he is doing injustice to others also who interact with you.
3. Pardoning means providing opportunity to improve your competence and not giving you 100% when you deserved a zero. This is exactly what Ishwar does. And remember that improving competence does not happen in one moment or through one word of ‘Sorry’. It demands dedicated practice and efforts over a period of time. Only lazy people seek shortcuts like trying to get 100% without even studying the course.
4. Unfortunately, those who attract people to their religion by saying that God will forgive their sins are fooling themselves and people. Suppose someone has diabetes. Does it get treated merely by saying sorry? When a physical disease takes much more than a sorry to be treated, how can mind – the most complex thing known to humanity – be treated by a sorry?
5. Actually these ideologies have a blatant flaw – they believe in one life and do not believe in rebirth. So they want to create artificial hurry formula to attract people. And scare them to Hell of they do not agree to them. We have already covered the loopholes of One Life theory in God must be crazy!
6. Vedic philosophy is much more natural, amenable to logic and reasonable. Neither is there a Hell where you would be thrown to burn forever by an Ishwar who is as loving as Mother, nor would He debar you from opportunities to actually raise your competence through efforts and achieve what you truly deserve. After all what is more satisfying:
a. Rank 1 through a fake mark sheet when we know that actually we had got zero, or
b. A proud Rank 1 through hard work and burning midnight oil, when we know that we did the best we could to become masters of the subject!
So in vedas, there are no shortcuts or longcuts to success. There is only the right cut! And the success is much more satisfying than what any illusionary and illusive shortcut can be imagined to provide!

Q: Is Ishwar with form or formless?

A: He is formless as per Vedas and commonsense.
1. He cannot be omnipresent if He has form. Because form implies existence of boundary. And hence He should not exist beyond the boundary if He has form.
2. Form can be seen only if Ishwar is coarse. Because any object finer than what can reflect light waves cannot be seen. Now Vedas clearly define Ishwar as the most finest, without gaps and uniform everywhere. (Refer Yajurveda 40.8 for example). Hence He cannot have form.
3. If Ishwar has a form, it means that someone created His form. This is not possible. If you say that He himself made His form, it means He was formless earlier.
4. If you say that Ishwar is both formless and with form, it is not possible because both are contradictory.
5. If you say that He takes divine forms at times, kindly specify what divine means. Say Ishwar took divine form of a man. Now how will you define boundary of Ishwar atoms and non-Ishwar atoms. Further since He is present everywhere with same density (uniformity), how we distinguish between man-Ishwar and rest of world. And if Ishwar is same everywhere, how are we seeing the boundary?
6. What we see as human body is actually continuous exchange of matter and energy with rest of the world. It is impossible to distinguish each atom as part of human body or rest of the world. So it will be impossible to segregate even body of man-Ishwar. For example, will the spit, urine, sweat and other excreta from man-Ishwar also be divine?
7. In Vedas there is no concept of Ishwar being with form. Further there is nothing that Ishwar cannot do without form that He must assume a form.
8. What we normally consider as divine Ishwar forms – for example people like Ram and Krishna – were actually divinely inspired. Remember, we talked about ‘inner voice’ of Ishwar? These legends were epitome of Ishwar worship and purity of mind. And hence for normal people, they were Ishwar themselves. However Vedas prohibit worship of anyone except Ishwar. Thus, these persons should instead be emulated (their examples be followed in our own real lives) to offer our gratitude to them. This hero-followership is as per Vedas and explained in The power of Now! – Know Vedas.
9. Had Ishwar taken form and worship of these forms been the recipe for salvation, Vedas would have detailed description on this topic. But Vedas do not even hint at such concepts.

Q: Does it mean all these temples and worship of Ram, Krishna, Durga, Lakshmi wrong?

A: Yes and No.
No, because the core of these worship methods is to pattern your mind towards higher realizations. Like creative visualization used in psychology as well. Humans understand things through sense organs and mind. These worship methods use these senses to understand and generate emotional / spiritual intelligence for understanding Supreme.
Yes, because today most of us have lost the core essence and do worship mechanically. This is not much fruitful despite best of intent.
Take example of a pious mother living in a remote village. Her son gets bitten by snake. She rushes to local Tantrik for Jhaad Phoonk in an attempt to save life of her child. Would you call her wrong or right?
The bulk of Ishwar worshippers today, be it Hindu, Muslim, Christian or whatever are in same state. Their intentions are genuine and worth greatest respect. But out of ignorance, they adopt wrong practices of worshipping Ishwar. This is obvious from the fact that hardly anyone even knows about the Vedas, even though, at least the Hindus agree that Vedas are supreme. We have forgotten the way our legends worshipped Supreme.
The right way to show our gratitude to great legends of past should be by imbibing their virtues and doing noble deeds accordingly. For example, we see Ravans all around in form of corruption, terrorism, immorality etc. If we can unite to counter these in rightful manner, that would be true glorification of Ram. Same with Krishna, Durga, Hanuman etc. If we can snatch back Ram Mandir, Krishna Janmabhoomi, Kashi, that will be true worship.
I have been a fan of Hanumanji throughout my life. My way of his glorification has been preservation of my moral character and putting efforts for a strong and healthy body that serves the society. What point is in worshipping Hanuman with weak body and irritable stomach yet consuming heavy laddus!
While the motive behind all these modes of worship is worth greatest respect and we humbly bow to the purity of true devotees of any cult, it is our wish to see all devotees to adopt the same methods of worship that Ram or Krishna adopted in their own lives!

Q: Is Ishwar Omnipotent or All-Powerful?

A:
Yes, He is omnipotent. But that does not mean He can do whatever He wants. Doing whatever one may want is sign of indiscipline. On contrary, Ishwar is most disciplined. Omnipotence means that Ishwar does not need help of any other entity to conduct His duties – creation, management, destruction of universe. He is self-sufficient to conduct His duties.
But He would act only as per His duties. For example, He will not kill Himself to create another Ishwar. He cannot make Himself an idiot. He cannot do theft or dacoity etc.

Q: Does Ishwar has a beginning?

A:
Ishwar is without any beginning and without any end. He was always present and will always remain. Further His properties remain same at all times.
Soul and Nature are two other beginningless and endless entities.

Q: What does Ishwar want?

A: Ishwar wants bliss for all souls and wants them to achieve this bliss through deserving efforts purely on basis of merit.

The benefits of worship of Ishwar are different:
a. By worship of Ishwar one is able to understand Ishwar and His creation better.
b. By worship, one is able to better understand His properties and adopt those in his own life.
Please note that worship does not mean some mechanical recitations or blankness of mind. It is a proactive approach to imbibe wisdom through actions, knowledge and contemplation.
We shall discuss this in detail subsequently. For now, you can refer to: How to worship?

Q: When Ishwar does not have limbs and sense organs, how does He conduct His actions?

A: He does not need coarse organs for his actions that happen at most microscopic level. He does so through His inherent powers. He sees without eyes because his eyes are present at every points in space, He does not have legs, but is fastest, He does not have ears but listens to everything, He knows everything but is beyond complete cognizance of everybody. This shloka comes in Upanishad. Ishopanishad also describes this in detail.

Q: Does Ishwar know His limits?

A: Ishwar knows everything. This means that He knows whatever is truth. Since Ishwar is limitless, He knows Himself as limitless. It would render Him ignorant if He tries to know His limits when none exist.

Q: Is Ishwar Saguna or Nirguna?

A: Both. Ishwar is Saguna if you refer to properties like Kindness, Just, Creator, Maintainer etc. But He is Nirguna, if you refer to properties that He does not possess – like dumbness, senselessness, anger, cheating, birth, death etc. Its only a semantic difference.

Q: Please summarize major properties of Ishwar as per Vedas.

A: His properties are infinite and cannot be expressed in words. But here are some major properties:
– He exists
– He is animate
– He is source of all bliss and happiness
– He is formless
– He is unchangeable
– He is all-powerful
– He is just
– He is kind
– He is unborn
– He never dies
– He is infinite
– He is omnipresent
– He has no defects
– He has no beginning and no end either in time or space
– He is uncomparable
– He maintains entire universe
– He creates entire universe
– He knows everything
– He never deteriorates and remains perfect always
– He is fearless
– He is pure
– He has no agents and establishes direct relationship with all souls.
He alone deserves to be worshipped without invoking anyone else.
This alone is the path to bliss and removal of all miseries!

No textual corruption in Vedas

This entry is part 1 of 5 in the series Preservation of Vedas

(READ THIS CAREFULLY IF YOU HAVE QUERY ON HOW DO WE ENSURE THAT VEDAS ARE UNALTERABLE SINCE AGES. We are thankful to several scholars whose source we could not track but whose works were used for creation of this article.)
On how Vedas have been preserved in pristine state, here are some analytical, unbiased and objective pointers. We provide here some details on how Vedas have been preserved so purely and how its not possible to alter even a single syllable. No other text in the world can claim to have such fail-safe method of preservation.
Our forefathers devised a number of methods to preserve the unwritten Vedas in their original form, to safeguard their tonal and verbal purity.

Swara Protection of Vedas

They laid down rules to make sure that not even a syllable was changed in chanting, not even a svara was altered. In this way they ensured that the full benefits were derived from intoning the mantras. They fixed the time taken to enunciate each syllable of a word and called this unit of time or time interval “matra”.
How we must regulate our breathing to produce the desired vibration in a particular part of our body so that the sound of the syllable enunciated is produced in its pure form: this science is explained in the Vedanga called Shiksha.
If you see a Vedic mantra in the Samhita, you would find certain marks after syllables. For example see the following image:
vedas-preservation-02

These marks called Swara Chinha depict the method of pronunciation. These markers ensure that not even a single syllable can be altered from any Vedic mantra.

In traditional gurukuls, pupils memorize the locations of these Swaras through specific hand or head movements. Thus you would see them moving their hands or head while reciting the Vedic mantras. And if a slightest error in Swara is found in recitation, they would easily pin-point it.

Further, different gurukuls specialize in studying different Patha methods (explained after this section) would still have the same Swara system in place, thereby easily tracking accuracy of each Vedic mantra to last syllable.

Paatha Protection of Vedas
A remarkable method was devised to make sure that words and syllables are not altered. According to this the words of a mantra are strung together in different patterns like “vakya”, “pada”, “karma”, “jata”, “mala”, “sikha”, “rekha”, “dhvaja”, “danda”, “ratha”, “ghana”. These represent different permutations of reciting words of a Vedic Mantra.
We call some Vedic scholars “ghanapathins”, don’t we? It means they have learnt the chanting of the scripture up to the advanced stage called “ghana”. “Pathin” means one who has learnt the “patha”. When we listen to ghanapathins chant the ghana, we notice that they intone a few words of a mantra in different ways, back and forth.
It is most delightful to the ear, like nectar poured into it. The sonority natural to Vedic chanting is enhanced in ghana. Similarly, in the other methods of chanting like karma, jata, sikha, mala, and so on the intonation is nothing less than stately, indeed divine.
The chief purpose of such methods, as already mentioned, is to ensure that not even a syllable of a mantra is altered to the slightest extent. The words are braided together, so to speak, and recited back and forth.
In “vakyapatha” and “samhitapatha” the mantras are chanted in the original (natural) order, with no special pattern adopted. In the vakyapatha some words of the mantras are joined together in what is called “sandhi”. There is sandhi in Tamil also; but in English the words are not joined together. You have many examples of sandhi in the Tevaram, Tiruvachakam, Tirukkural, Divyaprabandham and other Tamil works. Because of the sandhi the individual words are less recognisable in Sanskrit than even in Tamil.
In padapatha each word in a mantra is clearly separated from the next. It comes next to samhitapatha and after it is kramapatha. In this the first word of a mantra is joined to the second, the second to the third, the third to the fourth, and so on, until we come to the final word.
In old inscriptions in the South we find the names of some important people of the place concerned mentioned with the appellation “kramavittan” added to the names. “Kramavittan” is the Tamil form of “kramavid” in the same way as “Vedavittan” is of “Vedavid”. We learn from the inscriptions that such Vedic scholars were to be met throughout South India in past.
(Note that South India has a great contribution in preserving the Vedic traditions during a critical long era of history when North India was occupied in struggling for survival from brutal attacks of barbaric invaders and their progenies from West Asia. We find the tradition of Vedic gurukuls uninterrupted even till today.)
In jata patha, the first word of the mantra is chanted with the second, then the order is reversed-the second is chanted with the first. Then, again, the first word is chanted with the second, then the second with the third, and so on. In this way the entire mantra is chanted, going back and forth.
In shikhapatha the pattern consists of three words of a mantra, instead of the two of jata.
Ghanapatha is more difficult than these. There are four types in this method. Here also the words of a mantra are chanted back and forth and there is a system of permutation and combination in the chanting. To explain all of it would be like conducting a class of arithmetic.
We take all kinds of precautions in the laboratory, don’t we, to protect a life-saving drug? The sound of the Vedas guards the world against all ills. Our forefathers devised these methods of chanting to protect the sound of our scripture against change and distortion.
Samhitapatha and padapatha are called “prakrtipatha” (natural way of chanting) since the words are recited only once and in their natural order. The other methods belong to the “vikrtipatha” (artificial way of chanting) category. (In krama, though the words do not go in the strict natural order of one-two-three, there is no reversal of the words-the first after the second, the second after the third, and so on. So we cannot describe it fully as vikrtipatha). Leaving out krama, there are eight vikrti patterns and they are recounted in verse to be easily remembered.
Jata mala sikha rekha dhvaja dando ratho ghanah
Ityastau-vikrtayah proktah kramapurva maharsibhih
All these different methods of chanting are meant to ensure the tonal and verbal purity of the Vedas for all time. In pada the words in their natural order, in krama two words together, in jata the words going back and forth. The words tally in all these methods of chanting and there is the assurance that the original form will not be altered.
The benefits to be derived from the different ways of chanting are given in this verse.
Samhitapathamatrena yatphalam procyate budhaih
Padu tu dvigunam vidyat krame tu ca caturgunam
Varnakrame satagunam jatayantu sahasrakam
Considering that our ancestors took so much care to make sure that the sound of the Vedas did not undergo the slightest change, it is futile for modern researchers to try to establish the date of our scriptures by finding out how the sounds of its words have changed.
What more, today different schools of Vedas exist in south who memorize vedas in different means, as explained above. And if you compare the mantras memorized by different schools, you will find variation of not a single syllable. Remember we are talking lacs of syllables!! And still no variations. Thats why even Max Muller, a bitter critic of Vedic philosophy, could also not help but state that such a foolproof method of preservation is among the greatest wonders and miracles of the world!

An example of Ghana Patha

(Reference Source: http://www.krishnamurthys.com/profvk/index.html )
This example gives a faint glimpse of how the vedas in spite of its massive content, (Rg veda and Yajur veda have 153,826 words and 109,287 words respectively) have been preserved from generation to generation though it was all done only by oral transmission.
We give below a sentence from the Yajur veda, obviously without the svaras, in its original samhita pATha form, also its pada text and then the order of the words in the ghana recital. A pundit who has learnt the Ghana recital of one complete veda (he takes thirteen years of whole time work to reach that stage) is called a ghana-pAThi.
First we give the rule for the ghana mechanics of recitation:
If the original order of words in a sentence is:
1/2/3/4/5
The ghana recital goes as follows:
12/21/123/321/123/
23/32/234/432/234/
34/43/345/543/345/
45/54/45/
5 iti 5.

Example:

samhita sentence:
eshAm purushANAm-eshAm paSUnAM mA bher-mA ro-mo eshAM kincanAmamat //
Meaning:
Oh God! Do not frighten these our men and animals, may none of these perish or lack health.
pada text:
eshAM/purushANAM/eshAM/paSUnAM/mA/bheH/mA/arah/mo-iti-mo/eshAM/
kim/chana/Amamat/Amamad-ity-Amamat/
Note: The ninth break here and the last break are the results of a technicality which you may ignore, unless you want to specialise in this art.
Now for the ghana recital(without the svaras; with the svaras it would be a delight to hear). The recital is a non-stop recital, except for a half-pause at the place shown by / . There is no break anywhere else. The hyphens shown are for requirements of those who can decipher the grammar ; they will not be reflected in the recital.
eshAM-purushANAM-purushANAm-eshAm-eshAM purushANAm-eshAm-eshAm
purushANAm-eshAm-eshAm purushANAm-eshAM /
purushANAm-eshAm-eshAM purushANAM purushANAm-eshAM paSUnAM
paSunAm-eshAm purushANAm purushANAm-eshAM paSUnAM /
eshAM paSUnAM paSUnAm-eshAm-eshAM paSUnAm-mA mA paSUnAm-eshAm-eshAM paSUnAm-mA /
paSUnAm-mA mA paSUnAM paSUnAm-mA bher-bher-mA paSUnAM paSUnAm-mA bheH /
mA bher-bher-mAmA bher-mAmA bher-mAmA bher-mA /
bher-mAmA bher-bher-mAro aro mA bher-bhermA araH /
mA ro aro mAmA ro momo aro mA mA ro mo /
aro mo mo aro aro mo eshAm-eshAm mo aro aro mo eshAM /
mo eshAm-eshAm mo mo eshAm kim kim-eshAm-mo mo eshAm kim / mo iti mo/
eshAm kimkim-eshAmeshAM kim-cana cana kim-esham-eshaM kim-cana /
kim cana cana kim kim canAmamad-Amamat cana kim kim canAmamat /
canAmamad-Amamac-cana canAmamat /
Amamad-ityAmamat /
The significant point to note here is that in Sanskrit the order of words does not matter.
If you do it with an English sentence like:
Rama vanquished Ravana
It will go like this:
Rama vanquished vanquished Rama Rama vanquished Ravana ‘Ravana vanquished Rama’ Rama vanquished Ravana … and so on.
You can see the absurdity now. In Sanskrit this absurdity would not arise. So a ghana recitation is supposed to be equivalent to a recitation of the veda 13 times and to that extent is multifold fruitful! The 13 is because except for two beginning and two ending words in a sentence the others are repeated 13 times. (You can check it with the word paSUnAM above).

To summarize:

All the Veda Mantras have been preserved (till today) (at least three millenia according to western calculations) without ever putting them into writing. This must be considered a great lingusitic achievement of which India can be legitimately proud. The literature, which consists of diverse poetical and prose compositions were simply learnt by rote, the training being given by the teacher saying each word or combinations of words once with the proper incantations (called svaras) and the students saying it twice. They then learnt to recite it in continuous form along with the incantations. The continuous recitation of a vedic text is called samhita pAtha. The accuracy of the text is preserved by resorting to an artifice of nine different techniques or modes of recital.
The first is the pada pATha, which simply recites each word of the text separately; pada means word; pAtha means reading. The euphonic changes that occurs from the samhita pATha to the pada pATha is itself very technical (Sanskrit grammar would be crucial here) but makes sense.
In addition, there are eight other techniques of recitation, the sole purpose of each is to preserve the original samhita text without the loss or addtion of a single syllable or svara. The svaras are a significant part of the recital of the vedas, whatever be the mode. The eight modes are called:
krama, jaTa, ghana, mAlA, ratha, ShikhA, daNDa and rekhA.
In each mode the order of recital of the words is specified as a particular permutation of their original sequence.
All these elaborate and sophisticated approaches have ensured that the first texts of humanity – The Veda Samhitas – are available to us today in exactly the same pure original form.

Arya Ashfaqullah Khan – our role model

मौत और ज़िन्दगी है दुनिया का सब तमाशा,
फरमान कृष्ण का था, अर्जुन को बीच रन में|
– अशफाक

Scene 1:
A youth was lying semi-conscious on floor uttering only ‘Hey Ram’, ‘Hey Ram’ after a stroke. People gathered around trying to revive him wondering why a devout worshipper of Allah was uttering name of Ram in such a stage! One of his friends knew the mystery and immediately brought his ‘Ram’ on scene. Only then did the young man obtain some peace and got back to life. Such was his love for Ram Prasad Bismil – the legendary mentor of a whole generation of patriotic revolutionaries. The young man was none other than Bismil’s alter-ego Ashfaqullah Khan.
Scene 2:
A gang of fanatics entered Arya Samaj, Shajhahanpur to kill Bismil. Ashfaqullah was also there. Immediately he stood up and took the leader of the gang at gun-point. He threatened to kill him if they did not go back. He said – To bring damage to Bismil, you will have to first kill me.
Scene 3:
Ram Prasad Bismil was a devout Hindu. Ashfaq was from a conservative Muslim family. But Ashfaq was resolved to win trust and heart of Bismil. Bismil did avoid him in beginning but that could not deter Ashfaq. He knew that true worship of Allah exists only in Vedas. And for Ashfaq, that road to Vedic worship passed through Bismil – the tejasvi Brahmchari who epitomized Tawheed.
Eventually they became so close that they used to eat from same plate and Ashfaq spent more time with Bismil than his own home. Who bothers about religions when friendship is built on basis of patriotism! The two legends together, in a way, shaped the destiny of future freedom movement.
Scene 4:
After being captured, a policeman asked Ashfaq – “Why are you working with Hindus to bring down British Empire? After all you are a Muslim.” Ashfaq replied promptly:

“Because Hindu Rashtra would be way better than British Empire!”

These are not scenes from a fictitious film but true incidents from life of one of the greatest patriots to have taken birth – Ashfaqullah Khan. While the world may have forgotten him and even Muslim leaders desist from highlighting this freedom fighter, he remains our role model.
He was the first Muslim to willingly sacrifice his life at the gallows for sake of motherland. All at a tender age of 27. He writes that he was proud to be the first Muslim to do so and be first Muslim in his generations to serve the motherland.
It is time that our Muslim community gives birth to many such Ashfaqs and Hindu community gives birth to many Bismils who work together with them.
– He promised his mentor Ram Prasad Bismil to live and die with him. Eventually that became true and both great legends were hanged within a day on December 18 and 19, 1927.
– He was a true icon of Hindu-Muslim solidarity. His religion never forced him to curse an Arya Samaji – a critic of Islam – to eternal Hell. On contrary, the truthfulness and high character of Bismil made him consider Bismil as his role model and elder brother, much more dearer than his own family.
The great hero however had a very disappointing end. He was eventually captured by British because a Pathan befriended him in name of same ideology, and then informed police out of greed.
Today most Muslim organizations and leaders shy away from taking even his name. Zakir Naik will never praise Ashfaq for his sacrifice and patriotism. On contrary these perverts would believe that he might deserve Hell for doing the Shirk of writing poems on having soil of motherland even in grave, or being more closer to Arya Samaj than the mosque.
These fake leaders and representatives of Islam are acting like the treacherous Pathans for the Ashfaqs among the Muslim population. And thus Ashfaquallah Khan – one of the greatest patriots ever born in this country – is a forgotten name.
We wish that instead of terrorists like Joker Naik, such great legends like Ashfaq become the role models for Muslim youth. Agniveer is committed to revive the era of Ashfaq and Bismil and work among our Muslim brothers and sisters to nurture many more Ashfaqs that not only make Muslim community but entire humanity proud. And also expose the frauds who want to cheat Ashfaqs of today for their petty greed.
For Agniveer, such jewels like Ashfaq are true Hindus and true Muslims who exemplify by noble deeds. We don’t care about theological beliefs on unknown.
Our humblest salute to the legacy of legendary Ashfaq – a true Arya.
Vande Mataram!
Some great thoughts of Ashfaq:
कुछ आरजू नहीं है, है आरजू तो यह
रख दे कोई ज़रा सी खाके वतन कफ़न में|
ए पुख्तकार उल्फत हुसियार, डिग ना जाना,
मराज आशकां है इस दार और रसन में|
मौत और ज़िन्दगी है दुनिया का सब तमाशा,
फरमान कृष्ण का था, अर्जुन को बीच रन में|

– Ashfaq considered Krishna as his role model.
– Is this the reason why Ashfaq is not highlighted by representatives of Islam like Zakir Naik?
न कोई इंग्लिश है न कोई जर्मन,
न  कोई रशियन है न कोई तुर्की|
मिटाने वाले हैं अपने हिंदी,
जो आज हमको मिटा रहे हैं||
– Again it is evident that Ashfaq considered English, Turks etc as foreigners and wanted to live, die and complain only for natives of the motherland.

I am Good but Born Loser

How Islam was sabotaged

There must have been a truly noble inspiration behind Muhammad’s decision to name his belief-system as Islam – that means ‘humble submission’ or ‘peace’. Perhaps he was inspired by the vision of Vedas that resides within every human being to seek peace, equality, rationality and humility in his tribe. On surface, the great Muhammad was just another disease-inflicted ordinary illiterate born in the primitive Arabic society that hardly knew of any world beyond Arab and any religion beyond Paganism, Judaism and Christianity.  But he possessed the glorious rare inspiration to drive this mini-world of his towards enhanced sensibilities and humble submission to almighty God, despite his limitations. In a superstitious society where even his followers and relatives were fighting each other for petty selfish agendas, he possessed the guts to lay the roadmap for humble submission aka Islam despite the convulsing challenges and lack of education.

Agniveer salutes the genius of this great legend. That is why Agniveer considers Muhammad to be a role model. It wonders what would have been the nature of miracles the glorious Muhammad would have performed, had he received the opportunity to understand formally even the rudimentary basics of Vedas, Brahmacharya, Upasana and Vedic Dharma in general. Alas! It is difficult to comprehend His Lila at times!

Nevertheless, Muhammad was so far-ahead of his primitive society, that for them, his message was the final message for all times in future. But little did he knew that very message of peace given by him would become the breeding ground of terrorist forces, violence and intolerance immediately after his era!

Thus we all know how immediately after his death, his politically motivated followers cooked up fake Hadiths and killed each other to compile a Quran of their own choice, disregarding the true motto of humble Muhammad. Even his son-in-law and child-wife were fighting each other claiming divinity. One claimed that Quran was actually supposed to be have revealed on him. Other said that her marriage to Muhammad as a baby was ordained divinely by Allah Himself! Quran was supposed to have been collected from leafs, twigs, cloth pieces, leather pieces and what not! A lot many people were killed for claiming to propagate ‘false’ verses of Quran and even the Caliph who finally compiled the final official version of Quran 20 years after death of Muhammad, was murdered! What could be greater mockery of Islam that stood for Peace!

If this was not sufficient, even the word ‘Quran’ was coined much after death of Muhammad! And then began the satanic mission of dominating the entire world with this new ‘Quran’ and fake ‘Sahih Hadiths’ in name of order of Allah! Thus the simple message of Muhammad was converted into a recipe for intolerance that did not spare even followers of Islam.

Since then, peaceful Muslims have been murdered and subverted. The saga continues even till today. And all that happens in name of Muhammad!

First false stories were cooked up through fake Hadiths and fake verses of Quran to create a completely fictitious account of Muhammad’s life. These stories insult the great Muhammad by claiming that Muhammad was a pedophile, he used to promote sex-slavery, he married his daughter-in-law, he killed many innocents and what not. And then those who opposed it were threatened with damaging consequences!

Agniveer stands against such a grave insult to this great person and hence rejects all those Hadiths and verses of Quran that denigrate his character. Instead of trying to justify objectionable stories through even more objectionable reasons, we outrightly reject them as imaginations of Muhammad’s politically and criminally motivated relatives and followers.

The conquest of post-Muhammad Islam  in entire world, thus, is nothing but a political and criminal expedition continuing even till today, that has nothing to do with original legacy of Muhammad. And the worst victims have been the sane, rational, compassionate and good Muslims.

Times have changed, methods have changed, but one thing remains same – ALMOST ALL GROUPS AND PEOPLE WHO AGGRESSIVELY REPRESENT ISLAM AND WANT WORLD TO EMBRACE ISLAM ARE TERRORISTS.

So Babur was a terrorist, Aurangzeb was a terrorist, Nadir Shah was a terrorist, Ghazni was a terrorist and today Zakir Naik (including his entire cult of supporters) are terrorists.

Terrorists have become spokespersons of Islam

Two weeks ago, we wrote an article requesting Muslims on Agniveer site to share their views on certain specific points relating to terrorist and barbaric views of likes of Zakir Naik. This was done to segregate good Muslims from fanatics who were threatening Agniveer and all critics of ‘Terrorist Islam of Zakir Naik et al’ with dire consequences. You can review the article here:

Islam will not be a threat if…

We did not publish anything for last 2 weeks to await response on this article. We disabled commenting on other Islam related articles to have clear views of good Muslims on this article first and thus differentiate them from ‘terrorist Muslims’.

But the results from comments and mails that we received in these 2 weeks were most disappointing and shocking:

a. Not one single Muslim dared to condemn Zakir Naik for his justification of killing apostates and forbidding non-Muslims to preach in Muslim countries yet have rights for Muslims to propagate Islam in non-Muslim countries. Thus Zakir Naik is more important to them than the great Muhammad!

b. There were people who vaguely agreed to most of the points of articles were still refused to reject or condemn the books and people who support such views strongly. On other hand they would very vociferously condemn Agniveer for these articles defending Muhammad and rejecting the false Islam! Why such double standards? Nothing except Al-Taqiah (concept of fraud legitimized by religion) can explain it.

c. Many claimed that there is no concept of nationalism in Islam. A Muslim should only support a Muslim regardless of country. Thus cheating one’s own country to support a Muslim from other country represents true Islam as per them! In other words, they agree that one should never be assured about patriotism of Muslims!

This is one of the greatest dilemmas for good Muslims – how-so-much patriotic they may be, Al-Taqiah or ‘divinely blessed fraud’ and anti-national ideologies of their leaders and representatives would always put a question mark on their credibility.

d. There were people who openly justified things like Jaziya on non-Muslims because Muslims also pay another kind of tax. They refused to justify why tax-system should be based on one’s religion. And no Muslim criticized such views. Discrimination on basis of religion is something ingrained in their blood from very childhood and nothing can be more dangerous for humanity.

e. Not one single Muslim came up to say that all such Hadiths which insult Muhammad or humanity in general should be rejected regardless of they being called ‘Sahih’ (Correct) or not.

In other words, its ok for them to call Muhammad a pedophile, rapist, murderer, psychopath, lecher and they would go all lengths to justify all these through most perverted logics. But they would not agree to simply reject all these bogus verses that insult the great person. To the fanatic Muslim, their uneducated Ulemas and semi-literate witch-doctors like Zakir Naik are more important that Muhammad.

So blinded are they by vision of fanatic Islam, that they refuse to apply their minds to conclude even this much that if Islam means humble submission or peace, all the verses of Quran or Hadiths that talk of contrary have to be false!

f. No one condemned Saudi Arab or other countries for disallowing other religions but justified their rights to preach Islam elsewhere! They simply stated that it is their internal matter and hence they would not comment. I wonder why they do not apply the same standards for Agniveer site or Ali Sina or Salman Rushdie. When they can refuse to comment on Saudi Arab killing apostates in name of Islam, what prompts them to apply altogether different standards for non-Muslims? Are we witnessing yet another form of Al-Taqiah?

Summary Lessons

Under such a situation, following points emerge clearly:

a. ALL those Muslims who try to defend Islam or Zakir Naik are basically with terrorist mindsets. They believe that till they are powerless, they should vaguely showcase Islam as peace through Al-Taqiah. But once in dominance, verse of Sword takes over. Finally when dominance is complete, apostates deserve being killed!

b. Good Muslims simply do not come to debate or defend Islam or Quran. They peacefully indulge in their activities but are scared to condemn fanatic Muslims because these fanatic Muslims have a grip over Muslim population.

We met a few noble-hearted Muslims who even admitted that new Quran and Hadiths is all crap and has nothing to do with actual Islam. Others agreed that all existing translations of these texts published and propagated by mainstream Islamic schools are wrong. But they feared to come in public with such views because they are scared of the brutal dominance of terrorist minds over Islamic society that cannot tolerate any questions. The safety of their lives and those of their near and dear ones prevents them from condemning the false Islam in open.

c. While an Agniveer would be immediately condemned for anything against their views, Muslim preachers would not dare criticize Zakir Naik for his intolerant views on apostasy because Islam forbids condemning fellow Jihadis. This is because as per modern Islam (new Quran and fake Hadiths), the first and foremost criteria to qualify as being innocent, or humble, or deserving mercy, or not deserving hatred is being a Muslim (non-Muhammad version). Being non-Muslim is greatest crime for terrorists like Zakir Naik and his followers.

d. Most of these Muslims are brainwashed from childhood to hate non-Muslims. We received several mails that laid imaginary allegations on us for abusing and using defamatory words against Muhammad in our articles. When we replied requesting specific references, there was no response. Basically this is a case of a typical Jihadi Muslim taught to stereotype anyone who questions them to be abusive and insulting. They live in their world of hateful imaginations and create allegations that exist only in their minds!

e. A typical Jihadi aka terrorist Muslim propagating Dawah or invitation to Islam sees world in only two colors – green and non-green like a dog. The definition of green varies from cult to cult and person to person. So a wahabi terrorist like Zakir Naik or Osama would consider even Sufis and Qadiyanis as non-green. A Qadiyani would allow even non-Muslims into heaven in certain conditions. A typical Shia would not take religious scriptures so seriously but a Sunni would abuse Shia as a non-green.

f. Al-Taqiah or Cheating is an established way to fool people into believing that their version of Islam means peace. And obviously, it being ‘cheating’, no one would admit that they ‘cheat’! But it is clear from their deeds – when they claim Islam is peace but refuse to condemn those fellow terrorists like Zakir Naik who justify death for apostates!

g. Two of the worst hit casualties of terrorist dominance of Islam have been:

– Innocent good Muslims who want to join the mainstream, reject fundamentalism, live and let live, be patriots, be productive citizens but are helpless because they are at gunpoint of fundamentalists. Further they are brainwashed since childhood to remain in confused state throughout their lives.

– The founder of Islam – Muhammad. Today the world knows a completely different Muhammad – thanks to fake Hadiths and false Quran – and either hates him or adores him for all the wrong reasons. Only the word ‘Islam’ implying Peace and Humility stands to hint at original message and intent of original Muhammad. All the rest of the evidences and testimonies have been long deleted by terrorist Islam.

This represents the most dangerous situation for humanity as a whole:

– Till perverts like Zakir Naik remain in dominance, along with the entire mafia that breeds fanaticism and terrorism, non-Muslims and even moderate Muslims cannot afford to remain in peace.

– The concept of Al-Taqiah combined with foolish secularism of fraud leaders cutting across party lines, brainless glamor driven media and commercial mafia ensures that they would never explore the roots of terrorism – false Hadiths, false Quran and the mafia that perpetuates this fraud and instead confuse ordinary citizens about true nature of Islam through ‘My name is Khan’, or beaten records of ‘ Terrorism has no religion’ or other gimmicks.

This allows fanatic terrorist forces like IRF to spread their web more easily and work towards shaking the foundations through conversions, deceit and attacks.

– Good Muslims continue to remain scapegoats and viewed with doubt and mistrust across the globe. This is further used by terrorists like Zakir Naik to spread hatred against non-Muslims and promote attacks like 9/11 or 26/11 or Kashmir Jihad.

Soul of Muhammad would continue to weep over such mockery of his efforts!

The only way out

a. Spread education among ordinary Muslims and non-Muslims alike about true Muhammad and false Islam. The mainstream media mafia and political frauds would act as barriers but alternative means must be explored. There is no other way.

b. Create an environment of welcome and invitation for bringing back good Muslims back to Vedic fold – their original roots. This would help them live with dignity without anyone doubting their intents and patriotism.

c. Muslims have been the most uneducated class thanks to misdeeds of their leaders and preachers like Zakir Naik. Today the contribution of Muslims to Indian economy is negligible. In fact disgusting policies like Sachar Committee recommendations are being used to allow incompetent have preferential rights over country’s resources.

The only productive Muslims are those who are non-Muslims as per standards of fanatics like Zakir Naik. For example a Bohra like Azim Premji or Upanishad and Geeta lover like APJ Abul Kalam.

In fact by reading the comments made by defenders of Zakir Naik on Agniveer site itself, one can assess the level of education, mastery of language and intelligence of an average Zakir fan.

Thus Muslim youth HAVE to be educated BEYOND the Madarsa farce. They need to be taught personality development, etiquettes, communication skills, technical skills, logical and analytical abilities and modern science so that jokers and cartoons like Terrorist Naik do not become their role models.

I wish if instead of such a joker, an Azim Premji, or APJ Abul Kalam, or Ashfaqullah, or Abdul Hamid would have been their role  models!

Agniveer Plans

Agniveer is committed to this mission to safeguard the entire humanity and is resolved to take following immediate steps:

a. Create more articles on Vedas and Vedic Dharma so that Muslims and non-Muslims alike can understand the true concepts and not go by fake brainwashing that is imbibed by fanatics since childhood. Thus all false notions about Vedas like polytheism, casteism need to be eradicated and its true rational, scientific and logical face would be explored.

b. Create a Dawah site to invite good Muslims back to Vedic fold. Also launch the Dawah movement of Shuddhi at ground level to help good Muslims embrace true Islam that points only to Vedic Dharma. We have already been doing this but would launch this in more structured manner now. This does not mean conversion from one religion to another. It means accepting entire humanity as own family.

c. Have a section on Personality Development to teach specific skills and concepts that would help a typical reader have a better attitude, more effective communication skills, seek a decent job, enhance his or her career, improve soft skills, improve logical and analytical reasoning, enhance emotional intelligence, improve aptitude and be more professional in whatever they do.

Agniveer team comprises people from IIT, IIM, PGs in Medical Science, Top Executives etc and hence believes that this would be an effective way to help everyone, especially Muslims be more competent in being productive and useful for country and the world. After all this is the core foundation of Vedas!

And also learn, in process, why a rude, illogical, comical, ill-mannered fanatic terrorist like Zakir Naik should not be a role model for any sensible human being.

d. Continue to refuse to debate or discuss with anyone who does not first openly and clearly condemn Zakir Naik for his views of killing apostates and all non-Muslims going to Hell. Unless and until one very clearly puts his or her stand on the 10 points mentioned in

Islam will not be a threat if…

we would continue to bracket such persons into ‘Terrorist gang’ and refuse to have any discussions with them. After all discussions happen only with humans and not terrorists.

e. We have received a huge number of challenges for debates. It is impossible for us to allocate scholars for every child that desires to debate us. So we request them to follow the steps listed in http://agniveer.com/terms/eligibility-rules-for-debate/ and send us the necessary details. But only after they have expressed their clear humanist views in:

Islam will not be a threat if…

The above article has summarized the essence of our entire stand against fanatic Islam and why we consider followers of the version of Islam who dare not condemn those who seek death and Hell for non-Muslims as greatest threat for humanity.

Agniveer movement is resolved to expose and eradicate this terrorism in name of religion through all legitimate means (non- Taqiah!) as ordained in Vedic Religion in brief.

The next phase of Agniveer movement would witness a shift in focus by bringing education and personality development among all who are either victims (non-Muslims) or scapegoats (good Muslims) of intolerant Islam through ground level as well as internet based initiatives. We shall conduct an experiment on how peace, tolerance, compassion, education and knowledge can melt away the strongest walls of terrorism, hatred and intolerance.

We pray to Ishwar for His blessings to enable us to make utmost efforts to reach a situation where we are no longer required to segregate people as Muslim/ non-Muslim and can proudly refer to all our brothers and sisters as humans alone regardless of religion.

The Goal is far and the night is dark.
But He is my light and I can walk!

Islam means Peace

The version of Islam today, as preached by likes of Zakir Naik, Osama Bin Laden, Talibanis, Saudi Mullahs etc are the greatest threat for humanity today. Due to this the Islam of liberals like Hassan Nisar and Dr Pervez Hoodbhoy remains hidden from limelight.

A large number of articles on the site expose the fraudulent claims of witchdoctors of neo-Wahabi Islam like Zakir Naik and showcase why it is utter foolishness to regard only Quran as final word of Allah and all the rest of the books on earth as redundant for seeking Him. We have explored fallacies and contradictions in existing translations of Quran, status of women in fanatic Islam, extremism and its cause in Islam and host of other topics. The impact has been tremendous and we have now a huge number of rational Muslims seeking ways to wiggle out of clutches of fanatic neo-Wahabi Islam. Many have agreed to believe in Rebirth and Theory of Karma. Others admit that all the Sahih Hadiths (True Sayings of Muhammad) are not true, unlike claims of the clerics that those who refuse to believe in Sahih Hadiths would go to Hell.

Let us assume for a moment that scholars and major schools of Islam like Zakir Naik, Darul Uloom, Barelvi, Qadiyani etc represent true Islam in their own rights. We would also assume that they know more about Islam than Agniveer or anyone else questioning Islam. So if these prominent ‘experts’ and representatives of Islam can issue the following verdicts and their stands on these topics very clearly in most unambiguous terms, there would be no reason for anyone to consider Islam to be a threat.

The verdicts we demand from these ‘experts’ are most reasonable and rational and have nothing offensive about it. It is the absence of clarity on following issues that causes all rational minds to be scared of Islamic terrorism and doubt even innocent fellow Muslims.

So Islam will not be perceived as a threat if, the clerics and experts state that:

1. Thus, if there is a benevolent non-Muslim who refuses to believe in Quran, despite being given an invitation to embrace Islam, because he or she did not find Quran convincing, or because he or she does know Arabic, or a host of other reasons, it does not mean he or she is disqualified from entering into Heaven and must burn in Hell forever.

For example, the great saints, freedom fighters, soldiers and social workers who lived a pious life, knew about Quran, but remained non-Muslim because Quran did not appeal to them, would not go to Hell. (Refer following video by Islamic terrorist Zakir Naik where he gives a most stupid logic that can impress only psychopaths):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbSUkq5ePew

This is very critical, because there can be no trust on those who eventually dream of us (non-Muslims) burning in Hell forever. There can be no greater recipe for hatred than this that we are condemned to Hell forever! The Islamic clerics must address this issue very clearly to cleanse Islam of allegations of fanaticism and hatred for non-Muslims.

Just imagine! Major Unikrishnan laid his life fighting Pakistani terrorists and safeguarding dignity of nation. But he would go to Hell because he did not have Imaan on Quran, Judgment Night, Angels, Muhammad and other fairy tales. But Ajmal Kasab et al who spread so much of nuisance may have virgins in Heaven merely because he surrendered everything to will of Allah and did Jihad – the greatest worship of Allah!

What more, even if a Hindu dies saving dignity of his Muslim sister, still he will go to Hell! What can be bigger insult of Allah and revered Prophet?

(Refer Islamic Jehad and Shirk – Why Islam is fanatic)

2. It is not necessary that a criminal would go to Heaven simply because he surrenders to Quran and Islam and says a ‘sorry’!. So all those terrorists who kill, rape or loot in name of Islam would go to Hell and should be openly condemned by Muslims regardless of their religion. (Refer Islamic Jehad and following video: )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maHSOB2RFm4

3. A woman is not bereft of intelligence or half-intelligent compared to men as claimed in several verses of Quran/ Hadiths. Allah allows women the same social, legal and political opportunities in life that He endows to men. (Refer entire series on Women in Islam )

4. The concept of Jazia tax on non-Muslims is disgusting. Social, political and criminal regulations should be same for everyone regardless of religion.

5. The English translations of Quran by likes of Yusuf Ali, Pickthall, Dawood; Tafseers of Sahih International, Jalalyn; Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim as published by Islamic publishers and websites suffer from discrepancies and DO NOT correctly represent Islam.

Because these are the only translations which are used for questioning Islam. The Muslim debaters would refuse to admit that these translations are wrong (because Islam forbids them to condemn other Muslims) but yet try to allege that anti-Islamic material is used to demean Islam!

If there is anything objectionable in sources cited by those questioning Islam, the ‘experts’ should clearly state that they reject the authenticity of the sources even if it is an Islamic publication.

6. The Sahih (True) Hadiths (sayings of Muhammad) which talk of rape of war victims, or killing children and other disgusting things (refer Zakir Naik claims Islam – The ONLY Practical Religion of World! and Practical Islam – Science of Hygiene ) are wrong and NOT part of Islam.

In general, any verse that insults the legendary Prophet Muhammas (PBUH) even slightly should be outrightly rejected, be it in Quran translations or Hadiths or any other text.

7. A Muslim who could not find Islam addressing his questions and converts to another religion does not require to be killed for apostasy as per Islamic laws, even if he propagates his new religion. Those who KILL apostates or justify their killing in Islamic state are greatest criminals. (Refer Zakir Naik – the mentor of terrorists)

8. All those Muslim rulers like Babur who admit in their own biography of indulging into pedophilia, homosexuality, cutting thousands of head, narcotics and keeping harem of women are not actually Muslims but disgrace in name of Islam. (Refer Babri and Babur )

9. All those clerics, organizations and countries that call for constant war against non-Muslims are against Islam and criminals. For example refer to following fatwa issued from Saudi Arabia:

Fatwa_It is Obligatory for Non-Muslims to Accept ISLAM

10. Non-Muslims should have the same rights to propagate their beliefs in Islamic countries, (so far the beliefs are not criminal, immoral and violent) as Muslims have the right to propagate Islam in non-Islamic countries. But if Muslims believe that it is against Islam to allow preaching of any other religion in Islamic countries, then they should also stop propagating Islam in other countries.

There should be perfect equality. And those fanatics who justify only one-sided propagation should be termed anti-Islamic on this specific issue. (Refer Answering Zakir Naik – Quran says there is no compulsion in religion)

We had already given another Test of secularism earlier but it seems bit too far-fetched today for the fanatic forces. However the current set of clarifications would require only lip service. We know there is a concept of Taqiah in Islam that is implied to justify every crooked act with enemies. But we are even willing to give benefit of doubt to these eminent representatives of Islam and assume that they will not indulge in such practices which were not allowed as per original message of Muhammad.

Whenever someone makes a cartoon of Muhammad or appeals for burning Quran, it hurts us a lot. We strongly oppose such moves to hurt sentiments of millions of our Muslim brothers and sisters. Disagreement should never imply hatred.

But the only way to solve this issue would be by offering the above-said clarifications publicly and creating an environment of mutual trust and dignity. Otherwise innocent Muslims would continue to live in humility and rest of the non-Muslims would continue to showcase their hatred against fanaticism by denigrating legends like Muhammad and Quran. And this hatred will continue to increase giving rise to more and more terrorists like Osama Bin Laden and Ajmal Kasab. And taking benefit of the market opportunity and petro-dollars in hands of fanatic forces, dogmatic intolerant fraud preachers like Zakir Naik will open more of shops to offer ‘peace’ by justifying killing of apostates and Hell for rest of us.

We request visitors on the site to help circulate this message and use your influence to extract public statements from influential representatives of Islam on these most vital issues. In absence of same, our tirade against fanatic Islam would continue.

Because let it be known that Prophet Muhammad was one of the greatest legends ever born in history. Any insult to him or his legacy is an insult to entire humanity. Agniveer cannot tolerate it.

||Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah||

May tolerance prevail!

Om in Hinduism

This entry is part 11 of 14 in the series Self-Help

Q: What do you consider as the greatest word in all human dictionaries?

A: Om or Aum or ॐ or ओम् or ओ३म् .

Q: Oh, the Hindu chant of Om?

A: There is nothing Hindu or Muslim or Christian about it. Om – in its variants – forms part of all major cultures. It symbolizes goodness or power or meditation or respect.
Hindus use it as a chant for all mantras and bhajans and are more popularly associated with Om.
Christians and Jews use it as ‘Amen’ to denote strong affirmation.
Our Muslim brothers and sisters use it as ‘Aamin’.
Buddhists use it as Om Mani Padme Hum.
Sikhism is based on fundamental tenet of ‘Ik Omkar’ or One Om.
Omni which  forms root of so many words implies infinity or ubiquity or tremendous presence. For example, omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient etc.
Thus Om – like its source Vedas – is beyond all later day religious or cultural divisions and is for entire humanity just as air, water, sunlight, blessings of Ishwar, love of mother, compassion for fellow beings.

Q: Is Om found in Vedic texts?

A: Yes, it is derived from Vedas and commended in other Vedic texts.
For example, Om is mentioned in following Mantras – Yajurveda 2.13, 40.15, 40.17, Rigveda 1.3.7
It is praised in several Upanishads and Geeta. Mandukyopanishad is dedicated to glory of Om.

Q: What does this Om mean?

A: The Vedic culture unequivocally states that Om is the best name of Ishwar. Refer Yoga Darshan 1.27-28
Om is made from three syllables – A (अ), U (उ), M (म्)
Now each of these syllables represent various characteristics of Ishwar or Allah or God or Supreme.
For example,
A represents vast, universal, worth being worshipped
U represents brilliant, minute, source, controller
M represents infinite, undying, knowledgeable, caring
These are just few examples. However in essence, Om summarizes essence of all other names of Ishwar.

Q: But how can A, U, M mean such things? It sounds so arbitrary!

A: To untrained mind, yes, it sounds very arbitrary. It is difficult to see a needle-hole while in a bumpy ride!
But this is the Vedic concept of origin of language:
To a mind in perfect tranquility, each pronunciation generates some feelings. During inception of civilization, Rishis characterized each such word (combination of pronunciations) to represent certain specific concepts.
The meanings for A, U, M are also derived from those feelings that each of these pronunciations produce in a tranquil mind.
An important note:
In fact this is how Vedas are to be interpreted. And this is the reason why most indologists fail to interpret Vedas correctly. One cannot understand Vedas until one is Yogi having perfect control over mind. Till we reach that level, we have to rely on other authoritative interpretations and logic.
Now since most people cannot have such control over mind, Rishis, classified some of the meanings of certain pronunciations in other texts like Nighantu. Based on this more coarser meanings of Vedic mantras were derived for less endowed people. Then they simplified them even further into simpler texts and so on. Most of us will have to use this texts, along with our own intellect to deduce the meaning of Vedic mantras. But while other texts provide clues to Vedas, Vedas themselves remain the ultimate benchmark that can be comprehended fully only in perfect state of tranquility. However the very process of trying to understand Vedas help us reach that level of mental capability. This forms the entire philosophy of studying and applying Vedas.
And that is why a reader of Vedas should be clear that Vedas can be understood only as per root essence of each word and possibly each syllable and not later day meanings. For example, ‘Go’ has the root essence of something that moves or provided progression. But fools try to interpret ‘Go’ in Vedic mantras to mean ‘cow’ everywhere and hence misinterpret Vedas. So Vedas demand understanding of root words, and ‘feeling’ the mantras rather than mechanical interpretations. And since its an evolutionary process for each of us, Vedic philosophy is quite liberal about those who believe in Vedas and to whatever extent as per Laws of Karma.

Q: Could you be more clear about this concept of meaning from pronunciation of each syllable in case of A U M? Give an example.

A: Clarity can come only with perfect tranquility of mind. But lets take an example to explain how different sounds evoke different feelings or meanings – ‘M’ denotes emotional and caring aspect of Paramatma/ Ishwar. And you would see that even among normal human beings, there is a strong common thread across almost all cultures when it comes to ‘caring love’. So the word to signify Mother in almost all languages and cultures has the sound of ‘M’. Some cultures use a close sibling ‘N’ which comes under the same family of sounds. This is the sound that most children utter first for physiological reasons and develop an emotional relation with. Ishwar’s language and His creation all go in sync.
Since this motherly love is one of the strongest emotions, we find it common across entire humanity in form of M. Same is case with other syllables which form part of Om.

Q: OK, I understand that Om has a great meaning. But why should I chant it?
A: Chanting of Om has several benefits – therapeutic, psychological and spiritual. Even if you don’t know the meaning of Om or are otherwise skeptic about it, you can still avail the therapeutic benefits from it. Some people stay away from Om considering that it belongs to a particular religion. But as we have seen, there is nothing religious about Om. It existed much before these new religions came into existence and is in any case part of all major cultures.
To deny oneself of benefit of Om simply because it existed before their religion emerged is akin to refusing to use one’s hands, legs, air, water, horses, vehicles, food items, medicines etc simply because these also existed before their religion emerged.
Further, there is nothing in the meaning and essence of Om that is against the definition of God/Ishwar/Allah in any religion. Thus one should not be hesitant in embracing ‘Om’.
Om is supposed to be the primordial sound of universe and its reverberations are the most natural experience for all souls. This Om through its reverberations forms the connect between us and the Supreme Entity. Buddhists call it Inevitable Laws of Nature designed to benefit us, and we call it Existent, Conscious, Blissful Ishwar.

Q: So what are the therapeutic or health benefits?

A: Om is a foolproof method to add healthy years to your life.
a. Chanting of Om several times would relax your entire body and regulate your hormonal system.
b. If you have disorders due to anxiety or worry, or you tend to lose temper, there can be no better remedy.
c. It acts like a detoxifying agent for entire body. If your environment is polluted, you MUST use it.
d. It strengthens heart and circulatory system.
e. It will make your digestion stronger.
f. It will bring youthfulness in body and face.
g. If you are tired and exhausted, it can serve as a great rejuvenator.
h. It can solve most worrisome sleep disturbance patterns, in case you suffer from it. You would wake up alert from sleep if you practice it in night.
i. It strengthens your lungs with some practice.
etc etc
Om-in-hinduism

Q: What are psychological benefits of Om?

A: Om can become a life changing experience:
a. It can make you much more relaxed to face the world around comfortably.
b. It can help you control your anger and frustration. If you have been chanting Om regularly, it is unlikely that you get angry.
c. It can help you be in resonance with nature. Thus you would find yourself much more intuitive and in control of things. Your gut feel will become much higher.
d. Your interpersonal relationships will improve. You would be able to develop rapport with people much better and make friends from enemies.
e. You will find life much more meaningful and purposeful and carry that natural smile.
f. You will find a jump in your enthusiasm and activity level. Your alertness would increase.
g. You can never feel depressed if you are into Om therapy.
h. If you have a friend suffering from depression and having suicidal thoughts, make him read this article and Gayatri Mantra therapy. Soon all depressing thoughts will vanish away.

Q: What are spiritual benefits of Om?

A: Meditation upon Om is the best spiritual exercise on earth.
a. It helps you develop emotional connect with Ishwar and realize your relation with Ishwar.
b. It helps you realize your purpose in life and how Ishwar is helping you.
c. It helps you realize your identity beyond this temporary hustle-bustle of the world around and develops a sense of how to make best use of this world for the bigger goal.
d. It provides a sense of security that is unmatched. You realize how you are constantly under protection of Ishwar every moment.
e. It helps you feel the Law of Karma and how each thought of yours is shaping the next moment of life and how Ishwar is managing this Law of Karma meticulously for your benefit alone. You understand why and how Ishwar is just and compassionate at the same time. How in his justice alone lies his pardon! How he loves you! How he is caring for you! How he is pampering you!

Q: How to derive these benefits? What is the method of Om therapy?

A: The complete therapy would be detailed and require separate coverage. Also, depending upon individual stage and requirements, it can be customized. After all its not a mechanical exercise but a direct one-to-one interaction between you and He, without any other entity in between.
But here is a standard procedure:
1. Sit down with backbone straight in a position where you need not worry about bodily discomfort. If you are unwell, you can do it lying down. But otherwise, always prefer to be seated. Close your eyes. Take some relaxed deep breaths to release any body tensions.
2. Four times are best for Om therapy – one immediately after waking up, one after morning cleansing, one in evening during sunset and finally before sleep. You can also do it when you have nothing else to do better – traveling in a bus (make sure you are not driving!), waiting for someone, feeling the need to get rid of negative emotions or having the relaxed morning walk in park. (Though make sure you are not into something that demands alertness)
3. Listen to the method of chant as provided in audio in beginning of article. You can prolong the duration of each chant depending on your comfort. In general, longer the better but if done with comfort.
4. Now do at least 3-5 chants each time. If chanting loud is an issue, you can do it silently.
5. During each chant, FEEL the Ishwar and his love around. Keep a slight smile and flow into the reverberations of the sound inside. This is not the time to think about Ishwar but to FEEL the Ishwar. We want to work at emotional level and not at logical level right now. (Rest of the day is for logic and if that be insufficient, we have enough material to counter and debate at Agniveer.com and hone these skills 🙂 )
6. Continue the vocal chants as long as you enjoy, and then start chanting silently. You can also focus on rhythmic breath patterns for some time. Then you can switch to Gayatri Therapy and then again switch to silent Om Therapy.
7. After you have completed all this, you can switch to Shanti Mantra and conclude. Shanti Mantra basically prays for peace everywhere.
8. After this, if you wish you can continue this meditative stage as long you enjoy and pray to Ishwar in whatever way you desire or whatever name you want to take with a thankful attitude. If you are an atheist, you can replace thought of Ishwar with sense of comfort and peace (Its one and same with difference in semantics alone)
Thats it!
I have just shared a trade secret in plain simple terms that otherwise has become a multi-billion dollar industry and bread and butter of many a self-help gurus! Only that this would be much more practical and effective! And that it has been provided without redundant jargon and packaging!

Q: But I am a Muslim and you abuse Muslims on your site. Why should I follow what you say?

A:
1. As I said there is nothing Hindu, Muslim or Christian about Om or Gayatri Mantra. Do you refuse to eat mangoes because it is not mentioned in Quran? The only things that a Muslim is prohibited from is what goes against Quran. But there is nothing in Om or Gayatri that is against any theist or even atheist belief.
2. What you are referring to as abuses to Muslims is merely an intellectual debate on books and has nothing to do with being insulting to anyone. Do you refuse to have food from mother merely because you have different viewpoints? One should never mix intellectual differences with emotional bonding.
3. See, despite whatever we may have written that you may have objections to, we still openly claim to be proud of calling ourselves ‘Muslim’ because it has a great meaning. We proudly hail Genius Muhammad as our role model. And we proudly sit in Vajrasana which is nothing but Namaaz position because it is good for digestion and general health. Thus while we may differ, we are still one family!
4. Even if you hate us, why should you refuse to take benefits from Om Therapy? Do you refuse to receive your father’s letter because you do not like the postman? Agniveer is just a postman – a carrier. So even if you hate us, you should not stop yourself from imbibing good things that are compliant even with your own interpretation of Islam.
5. See, all these debates are superficial and merely tools to explore true wisdom. We may have different beliefs due to our different experiences in life and we should definitely discuss and debate to learn from each other. But beyond all these debates and arguments, which even get hot at times, we are still humans. And to love fellow beings is our innate nature – gift of Ishwar. After all we are one single family! But why prohibit yourself from deriving benefits from something which is neither Agniveer’s copyright, nor against Islam, nor can do any harm at all? Good things should be imbibed even from enemies!
6. So let us keep our intellectual differences aside, use other forums to sort those out. And if you are too angry with our other posts, feel free to scold or abuse us to your heart’s content through comments. We shall not delete them. But please make best use of Om Therapy. It can change your life!
Same logic we adopted for Christians and all other people who otherwise differ from us.

Q: I still have a doubt. In a world demanding actions, how can chanting do wonders? Is this not an escape mechanism to run away from challenges of life?

A:
1. Any form of meditation or Om therapy or whatever is not a replacement for rest of the duties of life. It is on contrary a catalyst to increase the efficiency of our overall life. Thus one is not expected to run away from duties and chant Om.  On contrary, one is supposed to do it for a limited period of time in general. It won’t take more than 15-20 minutes in entire day if you do it 4 times. You can increase the duration for specific objectives.
2. Chanting is nothing but a commitment. Its a promise you give to Ishwar/ Allah or God that you would cooperate with Him. That you would justify all his caring and love showered upon you. That you would try to imbibe the qualities that are expected from you. That you would try to emulate Ishwar in those qualities where you can – justice, compassion, discipline, consistency etc.
Chanting in this manner is a commitment at subconscious level. And hence it works! Those who chant with this overall theme, derive the best benefits.
However those who chant even mechanically would at least derive the health benefits. Even if you don’t believe in benefits of desi cow’s milk, it would still benefit you if you consume. Same is the case here. But when done with FEELINGS, benefits multiply!

Q: There are some more doubts. How do I address them?

A: Proof of the pudding is in the eating. Simply practice for a month and all doubts would be dissolved. However if you still have some really valid doubts or specific requirements, you can Contact us or comment here. But remember, we can show you the path. It is you who will have to walk across! And believe us, it would indeed be greatest fun!
So just get going into Om Therapy!

What does Agniveer stand for?

154

The Agniveer site today contains a vast number of articles on various topics. It is difficult for one to assess the stance of Agniveer by reading just a few articles. While we have made our overall goal and vision clear through Site Name, Tag Line, Footer Statement, About page and Disclaimer sections, we feel it would be worthwhile to spell our stand on various issues slightly more specifically so as to dispel any confusions.

Foundation – Agniveer believes in universal humanism and refuses to accept any discrimination whatsoever on basis of religion, caste, gender, geography, race. We believe in one humanity, one family and one religion of humanity. This is the Vedic Dharma which encompasses all human beings without any discrimination.

1. Agniveer believes in Vedic Dharma as detailed in Vedic Religion in brief and accordingly in peace, tolerance, character and unity on foundations of truth and honesty. If anyone has any objections to it, we are more than eager to discuss and refine. But no one ever found any defect in it.

2. Agniveer believes Vedas – the first texts of humankind – to be obtained through inspiration of Ishwar. It does not believe in any other text to be divine. There are various compelling reasons to conclude so.

3. However, Agniveer does not believe in forcing people to blindly adopt Vedas. This is against the fundamental tenets of Vedas. The acceptance of Vedas as divine should come as a conclusion and not as an initial assumption – this is the essence of Vedas. Thus we believe that all those people who are not yet convinced of Vedas being divine are still noble and virtuous people if they follow the dictum of “Accept truth, reject the rest” and consider entire world as their own family.

4. Each individual may have his or her own viewpoint and hence it is natural that there are differences in viewpoints of Agniveer and innumerable other people, groups and cults. Agniveer favors a path of intellectual discussions rooted in familial bonding to reconcile any differences. Vedic Dharma is for entire humanity, so even if someone disagrees to us, our approach would be same as what happens among different members of the same family.

Vedic dharma is same for all humans regardless of their caste, creed, birth, gender, geography or even other belief systems so far they desire peace and bliss for all and do not push doctrines through force or deceit.

5. Agniveer believes that the 8 fold path of Yoga is the way to worship Ishwar or progress spiritually or gain true success and happiness in life. The 8 fold path is:

Yam – Non-violence, Truth, Non-Stealing, Non-Hoarding, Self-control
Niyam – Purity of thought and mind, Self-satisfaction, Putting greatest efforts, Introspection and Self-Education, Dedicating everything to Ishwar by dissolving the ‘I’
Asan – Ability to focus peacefully for prolonged time without getting impatient or physical debilities
Pranayam – Control over breathing patterns
Pratyahar – To be able to dissociate mind from external disturbances
Dharana – Focus on Ishwar and his properties
Dhyana = Continuation of this focus with deep contemplation at emotional as well as logical levels
Samadhi – Achieving the state of feeling the Ishwar without any distractions.

6. Agniveer believes in an evolutionary approach and considers that brute force approach can have the opposite implication. Thus the Agniveer approach is that of spreading intellectual and emotional awareness in most honest and peaceful manner.

7. Agniveer is strongly against birth-based caste system. And it considers that those who support it and justify denying equality of social and political rights to certain sections of people based on their birth are greatest enemies of humanity. Agniveer completely rejects all such people and all those false texts that support such shameful concepts.

8. Agniveer is strongly against those perverts and their perverted texts which consider women to have inferior rights compared to men. Vedas put women at highest pedestal and those who deny so are greatest enemies of humanity.

9. Agniveer firmly believes in concept of ‘Matruvat Paradareshu’ – all women except one single wife are equivalent to mother. It thus condemns everyone who consider women otherwise, regardless of religion, caste, society or any other man-made demarcation. It is also strongly against the entire media/ glamor/corporate/ film/ sports mafia of today that projects women as objects of lust. We consider this mafia to be the disease of the society.

Vedas state that those who earn by exploiting women should be severely punished. We oppose both incarceration of women through purdah/ burqah as well as their commercial exploitation in name of entertainment as commoditization of motherly force and strongly oppose it.

10. We completely reject the fake translations of Vedas by likes of Griffith and Max Muller. We are trying to get useful books on understanding Vedas through Downloads section. But we want to make it clear that Vedas cannot be interpreted literally using modern language. Vedic mantras are like formulae concealing truly deep essence that require deep introspection, a bit of understanding of the ancient language and ‘feeling’ the mantras rather than trying to interpret them mechanically. Vedas do not contain history or specific time bound instructions but only fundamental principles.

11. Agniveer does not claim to be Arya Samaji as alleged by many. This word ‘Arya Samaj’ has today lost its original essence due to misdirected ways of certain representatives of Arya Samaj in recent times. We however are in complete sync with the ‘original mission’ of Arya Samaj as elaborated by Swami Dayanand Saraswati who is a role model for us. Thus we are ‘Arya Samaji’ if you go by the root meaning and original mission, but not so if you want to draw any allegiance to current ‘organization’. To avoid confusions, we prefer to call ourselves only ‘Arya’ or ‘Vedic’ or ‘Agniveer’ – a word derived from vedic roots.

12. Agniveer does not believe in closed-mindset. We never claim our word to be final word of Ishwar. Hence we are open to discussions and invite all intellectuals to freely share their thoughts. The only topics on which we disallow discussions are birth-based caste system, justifying denigration of women and explicitly abusive posts.

13. Criticism does not imply hatred. We debate even with our parents and siblings and differ vocally in viewpoints but that does not mean we hate them. Similarly while we may have a large number of articles questioning prevailing viewpoints, we request everyone to not construe them as emanating from hatred.

14. Yes, we are on a conversion drive. We call it a ‘Shuddhi’ movement. We want to obtain commitment from as many people as possible to adopt Vedic Dharma as enlisted in Vedic Religion in Brief. We have already been doing so and would continue doing that albeit with more concentration. There is no bar of caste, gender or religion for this. Hindus, Muslims, Christians etc – everyone is welcome to embrace this original Vedic Dharma for entire humanity and be herself/himself a messiah of Peace, Equality, Character, Principles and Duties. In in process open doors for limitless success, happiness, charisma, excitement, enthusiasm, prosperity and purpose in life. Vedic religion is not a religion in conventional sense. Any person belonging to any religion is follower of Vedic religion if he or she believes in principle of universal brotherhood, truth, non-violence, compassion, equality and tolerance. Even belief in Vedas – the books – being divine is not a prerequisite. A person, who has not even heard of Vedas, is also a follower of Vedic Dharma if he or she adheres to core principles of truth, non-violence, compassion, accountability of actions, universal brotherhood and other noble traits discussed above.

15. Finally, Agniveer is not an individual and not even a group. It is a concept. We often mix between ‘I’ and ‘We’ because we believe in unity of spirit and hence apart from semantic difference, they both imply the same for us. If you agree with our overall vision and mission, even you are an Agniveer for us.

I request all our visitors to review the content of Agniveer in context of this overall stand. You may agree with or differ with us, fully or partially, but let not intellectual difference translate into difference in affection. Entire humanity is one family for us.

May we never hate each other
May we never wish evil for each other
May we never condemn anyone of us in Hell
May we only wish for each others’ well-being even if we differ
May we be mature enough to freely express ourselves and yet not create hostility
May we enjoy our togetherness as one family
May we continue to love each other as a mother cow loves its calf
May Peace, Tolerance, Truth, Cooperation be our weapons

May we have Shanti everywhere.

Om Shantih Shantih Shantih!

Quick transformation with Gayatri Mantra

This entry is part 10 of 14 in the series Self-Help

A Problem with the Vedas

I was once asked which is my favorite mantra from Vedas. I said ‘Agne Vratapate…’. A few days later the question came again. This time it was ‘Trayambakam Yajamahe…’. Next time it was something else and today it is something else. This is a curious problem with Vedas. Each mantra is like a sweet ocean of knowledge. More you dwell into it, more you feel liberated, more you get that feeling of serendipity, that feeling of ecstasy, joy, being enthused and what not! Words fail to describe it beyond a point!

Contemplation on each mantra makes one feel as if this mantra alone contains more insights than rest of the world put together! There is nothing more joyful in world than diving into the essence of any Vedic mantra. And when the untrained mind returns back to the mundane world it finds life much of meaningful and purposeful. And next time when it chances to dive into another mantra, it finds yet another ocean of peerless bliss. That is why it is impossible to stick to one particular mantra as a favorite mantra. Each mantra has such depths of meanings that it appears as if the whole life would be insufficient to reach the bottom!

Benefits of Vedic Mantras

Our seers strongly recommended contemplation on Vedic mantras as essential duty of all Arya or noble persons. The reasons are simple:

a. There is absolutely nothing more refreshing and relaxing that contemplation on Vedic mantras.

b. There is no better brain tonic than getting deeper and deeper into essence of Vedic mantras.

c. The benefits of Vedic mantras do not lie merely in the final conclusion of Vedic mantras, but in the very process of trying to get up to that conclusion.

d. Finally, to understand Vedic mantras require not only logical analysis, but also use of emotions and practical implementation. It thus provides a holistic foolproof recipe for the panacea that all the self-help books of the world try to achieve.

Now each mantra of Vedas has a wide scope and depth of meaning. Some mantras may not be easy to approach for beginners considering their current level of mind-training and knowledge. But there are certain mantras which are like desi cow’s milk. They benefit one and all and hence recommended by seers as necessary ingredient of daily life.

One of the most prominent of such mantras is the celebrated Gayatri Mantra. Such is the glory of this mantra that seers recommend that if someone studies nothing else in Vedas but contemplates only on Gayatri, that is also sufficient to take one to next level of evolution. We shall briefly discuss this amazing Mantra in this post and try to understand what makes it so amazing.

Q: What is the meaning of Gayatri Mantra?

A: We shall try to understand Gayatri Mantra as in Yajurveda 36.3:

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत् सवितुर्वरेण्यं । भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि । धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

tát savitúr váreṇyaṃ bhárgo devásya dhīmahi dhíyo yó naḥ pracodáyāt

You can find the detailed meaning from Chapter 3 of Satyarth Prakash or Light of Truth. We provide the essence here:

Literal Meaning of Gayatri Mantra

O One and Only One Ultimate Omnipotent Omniscient Ishwar!

You are Bhoo – the foundation of life in entire universe and unborn! You are dearer than life because life is sustained by you!

You are Buvah – completely devoid of sorrow. When we achieve you, all our sorrows vanish away.

You are Swah – the sustainer and maintainer of entire world and provider of all the bliss.

You are Savituh – the creator of entire world and provide us all the prosperities

You are Devah – who only gives and gives and never takes anything. Who is desired by all. Who is Brilliant, Who is enlightening!

Varenyam – You alone are worth being accepted. There is nothing except you that is worthwhile. When you are achieved, everything is achieved. And when you are not achieved, nothing is achieved. Because you are the source of everything.

Bhargah – You are pure and without any imperfections. You are the ultimate cleanser. Nothing unclean remains when one achieves you. You represent the most perfect state of purity!

Tat – Such are your characteristics that nothing else apart from you is worthwhile.

Dheemahi – We only accept you through our intellect. We utilize our power of thinking to think of you alone.

Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat – Because it is you who has and who will enlighten our intellect. It is only you who will lead us from wrong towards right, from miseries towards bliss, from impurity towards purity, from Adharma towards Dharma, from hatred towards love, from evil deeds towards noble efforts.

Overall Meaning of Gayatri Mantra

O dearest Ishwar, you are the most capable, you alone are full of bliss, you are perfect in all manner, you are unchangeable, you are unborn, you are undying, you love us so much, you give us birth, you care for us 24*7*365 from eternity to eternity, you alone are worth being loved.

You alone are worth being admired. You alone are worth being aspired. You only give and give and there is nothing that we can give you. Even this intellect through which we admire you and through which we enjoy all the blessings you have showered upon us in form of prosperity and bliss has been gifted by you.

O dearest Ishwar, there is no way we can repay you for all your kindness and love and care.

So we humbly promise only one thing – that this intellect which you have gifted us, we shall direct this intellect towards you.

We shall contemplate upon you alone because it is you who gave us this power to contemplate. You have enlightened us and we shall seek only you through this enlightenment.

We shall establish a direct connection with you and have no agents in between. We will use all the resources you have bestowed upon us through this magnificent creation to only seek you.

We shall not be affected by what happens in our surroundings, we shall not be affected by temporary instincts of pleasure and happiness, we shall not be affected by temporary loss, profit, happiness, sorrow, praises and insults and remain defiant in seeking you and you alone through our minds, our intellect and all the action we perform through this intellect.

The Universal Law of Gayatri and how to apply it in life!

Gayatri teaches us a fundamental universal law. If we direct the output of a system back to the source, the outputs are further magnified. This law is applicable everywhere – machines, economics, mathematics, society, inter-personal relations.

“Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi Dhiyo Yo Na Prachodayaat” says that if the system is such that there is

Bhargo — the system is without any inefficiency or disorder, the way Ishwar is

Devasya – the source does not keep share for itself and only gives out back whatever is inputted into it.

Dhiyo and Dheemahi come from same root word. Thus if we direct our output (intellect) 100% back to source of intellect, we make it a perfect system causing us to achieve ultimate bliss.

Those who have studied thermodynamics would have read about perpetual machines. The only reason they do not work is because there are inefficiencies in process of energy conversion. Lesser the inefficiency, more the time that the machine works. This analogy also explains our position in this creation. More we direct our intellect towards Ishwar, more we receive His bliss. And when that crosses a threshold we achieve salvation.Similarly, more we direct our attention to study of source of our knowledge – the Vedas – more the bliss we shall obtain for humanity.

The recipe to get rid of all worries, all miseries, all doubts and all negative thoughts and challenges in life is thus very simply summarized in Gayatri Mantra. Simply think of the Ultimate, simply dedicate all thoughts, words and actions to Him alone. Put your best efforts and leave the rest to Him and He shall manage the rest in best possible manner as He is doing even right now!

Doubt: If we only keep thinking about Ishwar as per Gayatri, how do we manage our day to day tasks. For example, if instead of fighting in a battle, the soldier thinks of Ishwar will he not get killed?

A: The doubt only comes when we misunderstand the characteristics of Ishwar. This problem as indicated would come only to those who consider Ishwar to be limited in time and space. Those who think that Ishwar is in a person, body, structure or above skies or sitting on a throne would fail to achieve both Ishwar and success in mundane life without using cheat-codes! Because such a God is different from rest of the world. You can thus be either Godly or worldly.

The concept of Ishwar, as opposed to such a limited God as described above, is much more intuitive and rational. The Vedic Ishwar is everywhere. He is within us and He is outside us. He is in our books, our clothes, plants, our body, our enemies, our friends, our food, our football, our laptop everywhere. Now obviously when such is the Ishwar, thinking about Ishwar does not mean as explained in the doubt. Since Vedic Ishwar is everywhere and without any agents, you are not supposed to think of anything or any person specially or in addition to Ishwar. Since Vedic Ishwar is everywhere, worship of Ishwar lies not in any ritual of Puja or Havan or Namaaz or Prayer but each act as per its purposefulness.

In Vedic parlance, meditating upon Ishwar means to enhance our understanding that it is Ishwar who is managing the whole show and giving us opportunity to reap benefits as per our free will. He is everywhere. When a yogi progresses with such heightened understanding of world around, worship of Ishwar actually means putting efforts to use every gift of Ishwar in best possible manner by use of our intellect.

So it is worship and meditation of Ishwar when a vedic soldier puts full concentration in fighting the enemy, or a Vedic student puts all his mental and physical energies to study and understand the concepts of his subject. Doing whatever you are doing in best possible manner is the true worship of Ishwar as per Gayatri Mantra. And better the focus, better the outcome. More you understand that its not the exam that you are giving, or it is not the war that you are fighting, or it is not the workout you are doing; it is your worship of Ishwar for a higher goal. It is your exemplification of Gayatri Mantra.

Reject all agents between you and Ishwar,
Reject your attachment to fruits of action,
Reject the belief that destiny is not smiling on you,
Reject the belief that you need to do any particular ritual to please Ishwar or change destiny,
Reject all those predictions of palmists and astrologers and their gems,
Reject all those tendencies of looking at planets before starting a noble mission,
Reject the feeling of you being weak compared to an unjust system

and

Simply assert your direct relationship with Ishwar by dedicating all thoughts, words and actions to Him and to fulfill His provided in Vedas as well as your own voice of soul.

Reject even the tendencies of untrained mind that tries to silence that voice of soul by urging you to follow old sinful patterns of purposeless fun and greed.
And reject even the feeling of remorse or guilt that arises after we realize that we acted against our voice of soul (Ishwar’s inspiration) for petty reasons.
Reject all these and become a Vedic warrior committed ONLY to focusing all thoughts ONLY on ONE and ONLY ONE Ishwar and none else.
None means no other demigod, no other prophet, no other worldly thing, not even wasteful thoughts of mind.

This practice of absolute focus on Ishwar brings the wonder that no other thing or concept of ideology or person can ever bring for you!

This is the meaning and essence of the wonderful Gayatri Mantra!

Doubt: Does it mean meditation is meaningless if we are focusing on our immediate tasks as described above?

A: It depends. For a yogi, since he is perfectly in a tranquil meditative state in all his actions, separate meditation would not be necessary. But for rest of us, who are prone to fluctuations of tendencies of mind like anger, fear, desire, lust, hatred, ego, boredom etc, we need to prepare ourselves to reach that stage of constant meditation. For them separate meditation on properties of Ishwar, purpose of our life, our own nature is of utmost importance. This is the time when you try to realize Ishwar, Self and our purpose BEYOND the push-and-pull of daily worldly life or Duniyadaari.

Experts recommend at least 2 hours of such meditation along with disciplined life for those desperately seeking salvation and ultimate bliss. But this meditation is not a mind-blankening exercise. It is an attempt to develop intellectual and emotional connect with the Supreme Entity. We shall discuss the science and art of meditation sometime later. For now, I recommend visiting http://darshanyog.org and reading their books.

Outcome of Gayatri Self-Help

In summary, Gayatri contains the entire mechanism of blissful living in it. I have been meditating on Gayatri for some time now, and each time I discover a new meaning and feel which is beyond by ability to express in words. But the net output are following:

a. Eradication of fear, frustration, tension, doubts and miseries

b. Revival of peak enthusiasm and vigour

c. Realignment of priorities and goals

d. Emergence of new improved ideas, plans and visions

e. Sense of extreme peace and love with self and world

etc etc. All wonderful things you can think of and aspire for!

A practice exercise on Gayatri (Note: The changes could be unimaginable!)

Step 1: Read the meaning of Gayatri mantra as given in this post.

Step 2: Read Gayatri Mantra meaning from Chapter 3 of Satyarth Prakash (preferably Hindi) and study Chapter 7,8,9 of Satyarth Prakash. Take 4-5 hours to complete these two steps. Then keep reviewing from time to time.

Step 3: Listen to the brief Gayatri mantra with meaning attached with this post.

Step 4: Devote 30 minutes daily to contemplate on Gayatri Mantra after Step 3. You can split in 10 minutes each in morning, evening and before sleep.

This may appear mechanical for few days but continue the same for at least 2-3 weeks. Try to feel the meaning and develop emotional connect rather than sticking to each word of the mantra. Let your mind wander to explore more insights beyond the words and try getting lost into the bliss you get. Do not use force but allow mind to calm down and experience the feel. Even if mind drifts and thousands of thoughts come up, stay calm and do not be perturbed. Ignore them rather than force them out and simply focus on feeling the Gayatri. You can use the music of Gayatri bhajan to start with focus or other feelings that come up within you. Enjoy the whole process. In night time, you can sit down on your bed, start submerging into feel of Gayatri, and then gradually slip into sleeping position and keep having the fun till you get into sleep.

Step 5: You would find shifts in your likes and dislikes and views of things. Instead of forcing your ego, flow with your inner voice.

In two to three weeks, you will find a tremendous change in you in terms of sharpened thinking process, intuitiveness, enhanced feeling of confidence and self-sufficiency, things going right much more in life, better inter-personal relationships, enhanced magnetism in personality and a lot more.

This is not magic or miracle in conventional sense. What you would have done in this process is to align yourself with your natural path and derive best benefits from Law of Karma. You have performed a cleansing action on your mind to eradicate negative thought patterns and replaced with the most positive vibes.

Imagine! If this be the miracle in just 15 days *30 minutes, what would the level when one does so for entire life, and with many many more mantras of Vedas and with much more dedication! He would turn into a Ram, Krishna, Patanjali or Dayanand!

Another important point

Gayatri Mantra is in first person plural. This clearly means that bliss of Ishwar does not come in isolation. Whatever you do, you have to rise beyond the ‘Me’ and do for ‘We’. Your goal is not bliss for ‘Me’ but bliss for ‘We’. All your acts and thoughts and words should be for benefit of all souls and not only for you. This feeling of ‘Idanna Mama’ or ‘Nothing personal’ is essence of Vedas and Gayatri.

So if this works for you, you have to ensure it works for as many people you can make it work. And you have to work for uplift of entire humanity. Also note that Gayatri and Vedas is all about self-realization. So there is no concept of force or compulsion to thrust these concepts upon others. You simply love and care for everyone just as mother cow loves its calf!

So enjoy Gayatri, enjoy life and make world a better place! This is the best self-help course you can ever get on this planet!

Some intellectual questions:

Q: Why is this mantra called Gayatri?

A: A technical question not much relevant here. But the word Gayatri refers to the Chhanda or prosody or the way it can be pronounced. Vedic mantras have a variety of Chhandas and the name Gayatri is derived from there.

Q: Is Gayatri Mantra prohibited for ladies?

A: No mantra of Vedas is prohibited for any person regardless of birth or gender. Everyone has equal rights over knowledge of Ishwar in same manner as light of sun. Those who state that women have no rights over Vedas are the greatest enemies of humanity. On contrary, there are mantras in Vedas which state that it is more important that women possess Vedic wisdom because they are the first teachers of next generation.

Q: What about Shudras?

A: Firstly, Shudra refers to lack of education and not any birth-based classification. Those who oppose this, again, are greatest enemies of humanity. Secondly, someone who understands Vedas does not remain a Shudra at all. So everyone has full rights over Gayatri Mantra.

Q: Should Gayatri be adopted from a Guru?

A: This Gurudom is another great nuisance plaguing society. Somewhere we have gurus, somewhere prophets, somewhere babas, somewhere peer-fakir trying to be agents of God. It is always good to understand Vedas from knowledgeable persons. But in absence of them, Ishwar is the ultimate guru and presence of any agent between soul and Ishwar is completely unnecessary. So do not wait for a Guru and make Ishwar your ultimate Guru. And if you find a knowledgeable person to help clarify your concepts, take full benefits from him but never with blind faith. Mortal Guru should never supersede the Ultimate Guru or Ishwar

Q: In which Veda does Gayatri come?

A: We find Gayatri Mantra in Rigveda 3.62.10, Yajurveda 3.35, 22.9, 30.2 and 36.3. The meanings of the mantra are largely the same with some differences depending upon the context of the Hymn or Sukta.

Q: What if this Gayatri recipe does not work for me?

A: The Gayatri recipe on this post comes with money-back guarantee! Just kidding! But that is how many self-help courses sell. What we have provided is a scientific systematic process. It has to work. If it does not, you need to revisit Chapter 3,7,8,9 of Satyarth Prakash. Comment here for any doubts and we would be glad to help. Make sure you try to maintain unity in thoughts, words and actions. Avoid meat, alcohol and vulgar/romantic movies etc for the period. Keep healthy routine – thats it.

Remember that we are trying to go towards our original nature. Anything unnatural may deter you. But if laugh of an innocent child makes you happy, or you find it natural to love your mother, or feel obliged when someone takes pain to help you without selfish interests, then you are human enough to ensure that this will quickly work for you!

Reclaim your ultimate bliss!

This entry is part 6 of 10 in the series Vedic Literature

Yajurveda is the Veda that focusses on Karma or noble actions. Thus it contains a treasure of knowledge relating to what actions we should perform to achieve bliss. The celebrated Ishopanishad which is supposed to be the mother of all spiritual philosophies of world has its source in 40th Chapter of Yajurveda.

Darshan Yog Mahavidyalaya has done a commendable job by bringing Yajurveda Commentary in Gujarati. This is based on the original commentary by Swami Dayanand who further based his commentary on works of ancient Rishis. We are proud to present this commentary to our readers and urge them to not only study it thoroughly but also feel free to distribute.

In future, we shall be bringing translations of all Vedas in as many languages as possible so as to spread the nectar of Anand and thwart the misconceptions created on Vedas due to bogus translations of incompetent and biased western indologists like Max Muller, Griffith and others.
